Troy Demps, Frank Spaulding and Eddie Banks discuss African-American hymn-lining and how it was originally learned from slave masters.

Description
One compact disc. The two award winners for 2003 were hymn liner Troy Demps (appearing with apprentices Frank Spalding and Eddie Banks) and hula dancer Kauii-healani Mahikoa Brandt. State folklorist Tina Bucuvalis announced the awards. Based on recommendations from the Florida Folklife Council, the Secretary of State confers Florida Folk Heritage Awards annually. The awards are given to outstanding folk artists and folk culture advocates who have made long-standing contributions to the folk cultural resources of the state. Established in 1985, the program parallels the National Heritage Fellowships.

Three DAT tapes. Digital audio tapes (DAT) generated by fieldwork undertaken to document the folklife of the Callahan neighborhood of Orlando, Florida. Results of the fieldwork were incorporated into the "Folklife Of Central Florida" folklife theme area at the 1994 Florida Folk Festival. The tapes feature African-American hymn lining and blues, folk tales, and children's games. Images of the project can be found in folder 1.

The program provided an opportunity for master folk artists to share technical skills and cultural knowledge with apprentices in order to keep the tradition alive. Apprentices must have had some experience in the tradition and agreed to train for at least six months. The first project director was Blanton Owen, later replaced by folklorist Peter Roller, and then Robert Stone. The program was continued each year through 2004.
