Description
One audio cassette recording. Jaya and Nila Radhakrishnan give a demonstration of East Indian dance along with an explanation of the music, story (Jaya), and steps (Nila); they perform a composition of Nila's father, C.V. Radhakrishnan, called "Amida Budgeon." Bill Lee and Beth Gill (of the Sarasota Sailor Circus) discuss the circus; Lee focuses on circus traditions and history while Gill discusses the school and work required and relationships with friends and family. Because this was the 40th festival, the Crossroads area was partly devoted to performers who contributed to the festival's past and development.

One reel to reel recording. Fitchen served as emcee. The Abraham sisters apprenticed under Radhakrishnan in 1990 to learn tradional Indian dance, through the FFP Apprenticeship program. The Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program began in 1983 with a NEA grant of $22,000. The program provided an opportunity for master folk artists to share technical skills and cultural knowledge with apprentices in order to keep the tradition alive. Apprentices must have had some experience in the tradition and agreed to train for at least six months. The first project director was Blanton Owen, later replaced by folklorist Peter Roller. The program was continued each year through 2003.
