Folklife Genre: Celtic

Date
Description
Celtic music hails from the British Isles, particularly Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Fiddles, flutes, bagpipes, harps, and dulcimers are the genre’s primary instruments. Florida folk and old-time music have traces of Celtic influence in their themes and instrumentation. Celtic music itself has experienced a surge of popularity in recent years, and can be found in most parts of the state. Claire Flemming, South Moon Under, Edward Keeney, and James Kelly are Celtic musicians in the Folklife Collection.

Hanson and his apprentice Keil demonstrate how to make fly-fishing hooks and lures. Diaz and Lindstrom demonstrated lace bobbin. And Famed irish fiddler Kelly and his two apprentices, Carsey and Gesele, play an Irish fiddle tune. The Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program began in 1983 with a NEA grant of $22,000. The program provided an opportunity for master folk artists to share technical skills and cultural knowledge with apprentices in order to keep the tradition alive. Apprentices must have had some experience in the tradition and agreed to train for at least six months. The first project director was Blanton Owen, later replaced by folklorist Peter Roller. The program was continued each year through 2004.
