Description
Death warrant for Giuseppe Zangara, addressed to Leonard Fielding Chapman, superintendent of the Florida State Prison at Raiford, as well as Sheriff Daniel E. Hardie of Dade County. On February 15, 1933, Zangara attempted to assassinate President-elect Franklin Delano Roosevelt as he gave a speech from the back of an open car in the Bayfront Park area of the city. He fired a total of five shots and wounded five people, including Chicago mayor Anton Cermak, who was standing on the running board of Roosevelt's car during the President-elect's speech. Zangara pleaded guilty to four counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to spend 80 years in prison. Following the death of Anton Cermak and another victim, Mabel Gill, Zangara was indicted for murder and sentenced to death. He was executed in Florida's electric chair at the State Prison on March 20, 1933.

Series of newsletters published by Lawton Chiles' 1970 campaign for U.S. Senate during Chiles' walk across Florida. The reports describe the route Chiles took, as well as the people he met and the topics they discussed. Other politicians, representing local and state governments, joined Chiles at various points, including state senators Dempsey Barron and Wilbur Boyd, and State Superintendent of Instruction Thomas D. Bailey. Chiles walked all the way from Century in Escambia County to Key Largo, stopping in Tallahassee for the legislative session. Chiles was a state senator representing the Lakeland region at this time.
