Reminiscences of the War Between the States by a Boy in the Far South at Home and in the Ranks of the Confederate Militia by Joshua Hoyet Frier, 1859-1865

Date
1895 (circa)
Description
A photocopy of a transcribed journal of reminiscences written by Joshua Hoyet Frier from 1895 to 1903. Frier describes the period immediately before and during the American Civil War. The journal documents his service in the First Florida Reserves from 1864 to 1865. He discusses the prewar debate over secession; the early enthusiasm of some volunteers and the reluctance of others; the shortages of food, salt and other materials as the war progressed; a slave hunt; Frier's acquaintance with Lewis Thornton Powell (Lewis Payne) of Hamilton County, who later gained notoriety as one of the John Wilkes Booth conspirators; his participation in an expedition to capture deserters; his work taking up rails; a duel fought between two officers; and his relationship with the other men in his unit. Frier's narrative includes a vivid description of the Battle of Natural Bridge in March 1865, in which his unit participated. He also describes the execution of two Confederate deserters captured in Union uniforms. His narrative closes shortly before the Confederate surrender in May 1865. The journal was transcribed by the donor, J.W. Hart, and there is an introduction by J. Hoyet Frier III.

R.A. Gray's University of Florida Diploma, 1929

Date
1929-05-28
Description
Gray attended the South Florida Military Institute in 1903. He ranked fourth in his class in 1903, but before graduation, Gray and nearly every member of the senior class quit in protest over the State Board of Education’s handling of the resignation of General Law. Gray didn’t technically graduate from the South Florida Military Institute. The South Florida Military Institute was absorbed into the University of Florida with the passage of the Buckman Act in 1905. In 1927, the State Legislature passed a special act (1927 Laws of Florida, Chapter 12443) that authorized the University of Florida to confer degrees to those who had withdrawn, including Gray.
