Description
City commissioner and vice-mayor Catherine E. Strong writes to Governor LeRoy Collins, relating the latest in a series of events stemming from a dispute between whites and African Americans living in Delray Beach. Following an attempt by African American citizens of Delray Beach to integrate the municipal beaches, four members of the city commission voted to remove the African American section of Delray Beach from the boundaries of the municipality, despite the fact that those neighborhoods were actually surrounded by other parts of the city. Strong describes the political situation in detail and asks Collins to veto any effort to exclude the African American neighborhoods from the limits of Delray Beach.

Letter from Mayor Mike Yargates and the City Commissioners of Delray Beach in Palm Beach County, asking the governor to consider using state funds to purchase a minimum of 500 feet of beach frontage with which to build a segregated beach facility for African Americans. There had been, according to the city officials, an "effort of the negroes of our near communities to invade the Municipal Beach," and they believed the problem could be resolved if a separate and comparable facility was set aside by the state. The commissioners also thank Governor Collins for sending agents from his office to meet with them regarding the difficulties of integration.
