Resolution by the General Assembly of Alabama to Annex West Florida, 1868

Resolution by the General Assembly of Alabama to Annex West Florida, 1868

Date
1868-12-30
Description
Joint Resolution by the General Assembly of Alabama authorizing Governor William Hugh Smith to negotiate with the state government of Florida for the annexation of West Florida to Alabama - more specifically that part of Florida lying west of the Choctawhatchee River. This would include the territory in present-day Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Walton counties. Commissioners from the two states did actually meet in 1869 to discuss the transfer, and a referendum was held to determine the interest of the people, but the transaction never took place. The document features a gold seal and certification from Alabama's Secretary of State, Charles A. Miller.
