Public invitation to duel issued by N. Darling to Judge Smith of St. Augustine, 1839

Public invitation to duel issued by N. Darling to Judge Smith of St. Augustine, 1839

Date
1839
Description
Notice published by N. Darling, a lieutenant of the 2nd Dragoons, that on June 6, 1839 he discovered Judge Smith engaging in inappropriate behavior in the presence of ladies, which he endeavored to stop, only to be restrained by others. Darling challenged the judge to a duel, but the judge brushed him off, hence Darling's decision to make the challenge public. A handwritten notation on the bottom of the notice explains that ultimately Darling did give Judge Smith "a thorough thrashing," although the judge attacked first.
