Advertisement for the East Florida Seminary, State Normal School and Military Institute at Gainesville in Alachua County, Florida. The institution was established by the Florida Legislature in 1851. The annual session began in September and ended in June, and was divided into 13 week terms. Male applicants had to be 13 years old, female applicants 12 years old. Students professing an interest in becoming teachers were preferred. Courses included English, ancient languages, bookeeping, piano, organ, voice culture, vocal music. The ad also lists the boards of instruction, government, and education for the seminary. Printed on page 110 of Charles Henry Webber's The Eden of the South, Descriptive of the Orange Groves, Vegetable Farms, Strawberry Fields, Peach Orchards, Soil, Climate, Natural Peculiarities, and the People of Alachua County Florida (New York, 1883).
