- An article describing the destruction of a rebel salt factory on the Florida coast at St. Joseph Bay by the crew of the US Bark "Kingfisher." An officer on the bark gives a firsthand account of the engagement in a letter obtained by Harper's Weekly. The second page includes an etching depicting the destruction of the salt factory. Published on pages 732-733 of the November 15, 1862 edition of Harper's Weekly Magazine.

- A series of letters from Louis James M. Boyd to his wife, Martha Jane "Jannie" Boyd. The letters are dated November 29, 1862, December 8, 1862, and December 9, 1862, from the USS Albatross at St. Andrews Bay. Boyd describes the destruction of the rebel salt pans along the Florida coast, his fellow soliders and personal matters, such as the joy he feels about the birth of his son while he is away.

"My Recollections of the Confederate War" by Sylvanus M. Hankins, ca. 1900

- Sylvanus M. Hankins' recollections of his experiences as an enlisted Confederate soldier during the American Civil War in Florida. Hankins was a private in Company D of the 1st Florida Reserve Regiment for the Confederacy which was one of the units that fought at the Battle of Natural Bridge in March 1865. Hankins begins by discussing Florida's secession in 1861, when Hankins was 14 years old. He recalls how Floridians intially reacted to the threat of war; the raising of military units; the death of his cousin resulting from combat wounds and imprisonment; the imprisonment of women and children and the burning of their homes if their husbands, fathers or brothers were suspected of deserting; the shooting of deserters; the wartime treatment of African-Americans; Hankins' enlistment at age 16; escorting prisoners to Andersonville; the Battle of Natural Bridge; and other wartime events. The date of these recollections is unknown.

Reminiscences of the War Between the States by a Boy in the Far South at Home and in the Ranks of the Confederate Militia by Joshua Hoyet Frier, 1859-1865

- A photocopy of a transcribed journal of reminiscences written by Joshua Hoyet Frier from 1895 to 1903. Frier describes the period immediately before and during the American Civil War. The journal documents his service in the First Florida Reserves from 1864 to 1865. He discusses the prewar debate over secession; the early enthusiasm of some volunteers and the reluctance of others; the shortages of food, salt and other materials as the war progressed; a slave hunt; Frier's acquaintance with Lewis Thornton Powell (Lewis Payne) of Hamilton County, who later gained notoriety as one of the John Wilkes Booth conspirators; his participation in an expedition to capture deserters; his work taking up rails; a duel fought between two officers; and his relationship with the other men in his unit. Frier's narrative includes a vivid description of the Battle of Natural Bridge in March 1865, in which his unit participated. He also describes the execution of two Confederate deserters captured in Union uniforms. His narrative closes shortly before the Confederate surrender in May 1865. The journal was transcribed by the donor, J.W. Hart, and there is an introduction by J. Hoyet Frier III.
