Description
Twenty-seven color slides. King learned to embroider with a treadle sewing machine by watching her mother in Greece. The Southwest Florida Folk Arts Project was conducted under the direction of Barbara Beauchamp in two phases: 12 November 1987 through 31 January 1988 by Debbie Fant; and in February 1988 by Nancy Nusz. Using a 35mm camera and a Sony tape recorder, and funded through a NEA grant,the two fieldworkers spoke with over fifty informants in Manatee, Sarasota, Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties, resulting in 20 participants chosen for a special SW Florida folklife area at the 36th Annual Florida Folk Festival.

Bartok's father and grandfather were traveling medicine pitchmen. She described traveling medicine shows; types of pitches and performances in medicine; wintering in Florida; her family history including their emigration from Hungary. Some material from the interview was used for the public radio program Florida Home: Humorists and Health Evangelists. Copies of the radio programs can be found on audio cassette C83-85. Copied from reel-to-reels T81-110, T81-111, T81-112, T81-113, and T81-114.

Thirty-five color slides. Many of the images are dark--the doors are in shadow, and hard to see. The Florida Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1987 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalis, Steve Frangos, Merri Belland, and Barbara Seitz as preliminary research for a joint folk art between the Florida Folklife Program and the Florida Museum of History. The field researchers focused on those areas previously overlooked by FFP staff. The research focused on identifying folk artists and locating appropriate exhibit objects.
