The Florida Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1987 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalis, Steve Fragos, Merri Belland, and Barbara Seitz as preliminary research for a joint folk art between the Florida Folklife Program and the Florida Museum of History. The field researchers focused on those areas previously overlooked by FFP staff. The research focused on identifying folk artists and locating appropriate exhibit objects.

Description

One audio cassette. Presentation at the Jackson County Public Library in Marianna, made in connection with the Pursuits and Pastimes exhibit about shape note singing. Dyen, a folklorist with the Florida Folklife Program, leads a conversation on fiddling and square dancing traditions. She discusses "Possum Day," held the first weekend of August; The Sacred Harp; the significance of all-day shape note singings; and fellowship. She also plays a slide-tape presentation about shape note singers in Polk county, which can be found on C81-22. In addition to the discussion, the participants also perform.

Two audio cassettes. Recording of a program for the Jackson County Library on family agriculture and turpentining for the "Pursuits and Pastimes" series. The program, led by Doris Dyen, consists of discussions on basketry; growing herbs and spices; hunting for snakes; folk games; and cultural differences amongst ethnic groups. Includes talks by Fred Williams and Lloyd McMullian. On tape C83-124, McMullian discusses hog farming; preparing and curing hogs; President Hoover and life during the Great Depression; African Americans and voting; company stores; and ways to farm and uses for turpentine.

Dyen, a folklorist with the Florida Bureau of Folklife, explains the profession using the Panhandle area as her example. Dyen discusses ethnic groups (Creeks, African Americans, and Anglo Americans), occupational groups (netmaking, fishing), and dialects. She also explains the project and the Florida Folk Festival.

Eleven color slides. Myrle learned t quilt from her mother, who was the sole source of money for the family. While working at a fire tower, which did not allow employees to read, she resumed her sewing. In 1979, she began selling her quilts. The Florida Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1987 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalis, Steve Fragos, Merri Belland, and Barbara Seitz as preliminary research for a joint folk art between the Florida Folklife Program and the Florida Museum of History.
