Description
Thirteen color slides. Slide S82-1007 is missing. The Folk Arts in Schools Project in Columbia and Hamilton County was a joint venture between the county school systems and the Florida Folklife Program. The project consisted of field research to identify local traditions and folk artists, and in-school programs conducted by a folklorist and traditionalist, which included visits by local folk artists.

One audio cassette. Side 1: Mildred Bowen, who started sewing and making dolls when she was ten years old, discusses the types of dolls she makes (straight, flip, bodyline), the materials she uses (usually cotton), and detailing and decorating the dolls. Side 2: Bowen talks about the advantages of machine sewing over hand sewing, the time it takes to complete a doll, painting with liquid embroidery, and discusses the benefits of homemade dolls over store-bought dolls.

Topics include family history; training with a local doctor; childbirth; medicinal treatments; pre-natal care; her first delivery in 1953; complications in childbirth including tearing, placenta, twins, and breached births; birth-related superstitions; labor pains; and monetary charges. Bonnie Carden, another midwife, also joins in towards the end of the interview.

Boltin told stories about the Seminole Indians, local history, the McQueen family, Frog Smith, and Stephen Foster. She also sang several songs. Moore performed two songs and accompanied Boltin on guitar.
