Description
Thirteen color slides. The Folk Arts in Education Project in Palm Beach County was a joint venture between the Palm Beach County School System and the Florida Folklife Program. It was conducted between 1986 and 1987 by folklorist Jan Rosenberg with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to add to existing social studies curriculum. The goal was to impart an appreciation of multi-ethnic traditions and provide a sense of place to the mobile student population. The project focused on the Florida Studies component for fourth grade students. The project consisted of field research to identify local traditions and folk artists, a series of five two-day seminars to acquaint teachers with the use of folklore and folk arts, in-school programs conducted by a folklorist and traditionalist, which included visits by local folk artists. In total, the project involved 15 schools with 779 students.

Eighty-one color slides. Images of Wakulla Springs boat drivers. Glass bottom boat tour over the deep springs had been going on since the late 1800s. Many of these drivers are descendents of those early drivers, and provide some of the same folk tales. One tale/feature was Henry the Pole Vaulting Fish, a bass fish that jumped over a pole (actually scratching its gills). The springs was developed as a tourist attraction in the 1930s (and became a Florida state park in 1987.) Drivers pictured: George Bower(640-657, 813-814); Jackson (765-781); Moretz (784-785); and Gavin (790-793). Henry the fish pictured in 759-763, 781. Also includes are images of the river, alligators, fish, cypress trees, and plant life.

Forty-two color slides. Images of Homosassa Springs boat tours and drivers. Homosassa Springs has been a tourist attraction since the 1920s. The incarnation of the attraction seen in these images dates from the 1960s. (The area is now a Florida state park.) Images are of the boat drivers ( Richard Strube, Cecil Johnson and Raymond Thompson) and the facilties, springs, fish, and tourists. Recordings of these tours can be found in S 1576, box 5.

Sixty-five color slides. Images are of Silver Springs boat tours and boat drivers. The springs are one of the oldest roadside attractions in Florida. Developed formally in the 1920s, boat tours have been given since the mid-1800s by local residents. Images include the boat drivers: David Faison (821-826, 850-858); Utz (827-847), Klotz (848-849, 859-867); and Jokler (868-875); as well as the boats, springs, park facilities, and tourists. Recordings of these tours can be found in S 1577.

Seventy-seven color slides. Images of boat tours at Wakulla Springs, a tourist attraction dating back to the 1930s. Many of the tours and features (such as the pole vaulting fish, a bass fish which rubs its gills on a wooden pole in the spring) date back to the 1800s. Images include the river, fauna and flora, the springs, the boat drivers and their boats, and the attraction's 1938 lodge. (Today the area is a state park.) Most of these images are duplicated in S 1577, v. 7, S81-741 - S81-820.

One video cassette. 20 minutes. (Copy can be found on FV-10, S 1615.) Interview with diving helmet makers Toth and Lerios; George Billiris' tour boat goes out on tour. Created for the Every Island Has Its Own Song project. The finished product was a documentary about Nikitas Tsimouris, a Greek bagpipe player, and his family, and the Tarpon Springs Greek community he lived in. A co-production of WEDO-TV and the FFP, it was funded in part by the Florida Endowment for the Humanities. Offenbach narrated. Folklorist Michael researched, wrote and produced, and Yvonne Bryant was assistant producer.
