Description
Two audio cassettes. Interview with oyster shuckers Duggar and Lolley. They discuss family history; George Kirvin (Duggar's first boss); local oysters; job conditions; shucking; how they learned the craft; Loys Cain; tools for shucking; and fishing superstitions. Between 1986 and 1987, a partnership between the Florida Folklife Program and the American Folk Center created the Maritime Heritage Survey Project. Focusing on the Gulf and Atlantic fishing cultures, and utilizing photographs, slides, oral histories, and on-site interviews, the survey climaxed with a demonstration area at the 1987 Florida Folk Festival. Also available on reel to reel (reels 6-7). The three main researchers were Nancy Nusz, Merri Belland, and project director David Taylor. Thirteen color slides. To shuck an oyster means to remove the meat of the oyster from its shell. This was often done before the product was shipped to seafood dealers and restaurants. Between 1986 and 1987, a partnership between the Florida Folklife Program and the American Folk Center created the Maritime Heritage Survey Project. Focusing on the Gulf and Atlantic fishing cultures, and utilizing photographs, slides, oral histories, and on-site interviews, the survey climaxed with a demonstration area at the 1987 Florida Folk Festival. Description
Four contact sheets with 139 black and white images; plus negatives and logs. To shuck an oyster means to remove the meat of the oyster from its shell. This was often done before the product was shipped to seafood dealers and restaurants. Sheets in envelope 31 feature images of folklorists Hepburn, Taylor, and Loomis talking with and taking slides of fish house workers. Collector Hepburn was from Dept. of Community Affairs, and joined the project after it began. Between 1986 and 1987, a partnership between the Florida Folklife Program and the American Folk Center created the Maritime Heritage Survey Project. Focusing on the Gulf and Atlantic fishing cultures, and utilizing photographs, slides, oral histories, and on-site interviews, the survey climaxed with a demonstration area at the 1987 Florida Folk Festival.
