Twenty-seven color slides. King learned to embroider with a treadle sewing machine by watching her mother in Greece. The Southwest Florida Folk Arts Project was conducted under the direction of Barbara Beauchamp in two phases: 12 November 1987 through 31 January 1988 by Debbie Fant; and in February 1988 by Nancy Nusz. Using a 35mm camera and a Sony tape recorder, and funded through a NEA grant,the two fieldworkers spoke with over fifty informants in Manatee, Sarasota, Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties, resulting in 20 participants chosen for a special SW Florida folklife area at the 36th Annual Florida Folk Festival.

Side 1: Mildred Bowen, who started sewing and making dolls when she was ten years old, discusses the types of dolls she makes (straight, flip, bodyline), the materials she uses (usually cotton), and detailing and decorating the dolls. Side 2: Bowen talks about the advantages of machine sewing over hand sewing, the time it takes to complete a doll, painting with liquid embroidery, and discusses the benefits of homemade dolls over store-bought dolls.

Description
Eleven color slides. The LaRoccas were from New Jersey, while Cox was from Cleveland, Ohio. LaRocca Sr. started his shop in 1927. He moved the store to Florida in 1980. They specialized in orthopedic shoemaking, and shoe repair. The Folk Arts in Education Project in Palm Beach County was a joint venture between the Palm Beach County School System and the Florida Folklife Program. It was conducted between 1986 and 1987 by folklorist Jan Rosenberg with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to add to existing social studies curriculum. The goal was to impart an appreciation of multi-ethnic traditions and provide a sense of place to the mobile student population. The project focused on the Florida Studies component for fourth grade students. The project consisted of field research to identify local traditions and folk artists, a series of five two-day seminars to acquaint teachers with the use of folklore and folk arts, in-school programs conducted by a folklorist and traditionalist, which included visits by local folk artists. In total, the project involved 15 schools with 779 students.

Seven color slides. Unidentified Seminole. Images are dark. The Florida Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1987 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalis, Steve Fragos, Merri Belland, and Barbara Seitz as preliminary research for a joint folk art between the Florida Folklife Program and the Florida Museum of History. The field researchers focused on those areas previously overlooked by FFP staff. The research focused on identifying folk artists and locating appropriate exhibit objects.
