Description: One digital audio tape (DAT). Rozar served as the emcee. Guitarist Tripp was from Tallahassee. Guitarist Hope was from Key Biscayne. The Sandy Creek Stringers, based out of Havana, Florida, consisted of Greg Evans (bass), Dennis Hardin (banjo), Roger Eudy (mandolin), Ken Toucinek (guitar), and Mike Palecki (mouth harp). Hardwicke (guitar) and Litsch (mandolin) were both from West Palm Beach. Pianist Byrne, of Clearwater, played ragtime. Little Big Man was a bluegrass band from Pensacola, included Lonny Finley (guitar/mandolin), and David Leather (guitar).

Interview with blues singer/pianist Ida Goodson

Description: Three reel to reels. A second interview with singer and pianist Ida Goodson (the first can be found on T82-1 through T82-4). Born and raised in Pensacola, she toured and recorded with various blues and jazz bands in the late 1920s and 1930s, and later worked for a lumber company for 35 years, while still playing the nightclubs. She converted to Christianity in 1960 and began playing gospel music. In the interview, she discusses and demonstrates various music styles (jazz, blues, gospel, ragtime); learning songs; her first blues song (One Finger Blues); performers she knew and played with (Duke Ellington, Charlie Segar, Jimmy Cox, Helen Jackson, Mack Thomas); difference between blues and gospel; and gospel quartets in Pensacola in the 1920s. Copied onto audiocassettes C83-10, C83-11, and C83-12.

He discusses learning music; attending Tuskegee Institute; teaching chemistry in Pensacola; varities of jazz music; working with artists like Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington; working for a radio station in New York City; leading a big band in the 1940s and 1950s; and various nightclubs in the Pensacola area. Florida Memory is a digital outreach program providing free online access to select archival records from collections housed in the State Library and Archives of Florida. Florida Memory digitizes materials that illuminate the state's history and culture.

Additional Links

Florida Memory is funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Florida's LSTA program is administered by the Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services.

For FY2023-24, the percentage of total costs for the Florida Memory program financed with federal money is 66%; the federal dollar amount to be spent on the program is $614,955. This program does not receive any non-governmental funding.
