Description
35 color slides. On Mother's Day in Mexico, singers and musicians would often serenade mother's below their windows (serenatas). ON 14 May, Radio Continental (1430 AM) aired three bands singing these serenatas. These images are of a rehearsal held the day before the broadcast. La Fuerza del Norte consisted on Tomas Granado (accoridon), David Avalos (bajo sexto), Guadalupe Rivera (bass), and Alberto Spinoza (snare drum). The Mexican American Music Survey was created to document the musical traditions of Florida's various Mexican-American communities: Apopka, South Dade County, Immokalee, the St. Johns River Basin, and Central Florida. Funded by a grant from the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Community Folklife Program, the survey was conducted between 1994 and 1996 by folklorist Robert Stone. Among the musical traditions were serenatas, conjunto, quinceanara ritual music, ranchera Michoacana, mariachi, norteno, Tejano, and pop music. At the end of the project, a sampler music tape was created by the Florida Folklife Program for distribution to various libraries.

Description
One reel to reel recording. A brief recording of WGRO radio station of Lake City. Recorded on Saturday, 4 May 1968, the second day of the Florida Folk Festival. The recording features a weather report revealing that the temperature was over 100 that day. Also heard is singer Johnny Paycheck, and a local car dealer advertisement.
