Four proof sheets with 75 black and white images (plus negatives). Between 1952 and 1959, the Suwannee River Jamboree radio show -- broadcast from Live Oak, Florida on WNER -- was Florida's largest and best known country music show. It was broadcast live three hours every Saturday night, with 30-minute versions syndicated across the Southeast. The show featured many North Florida and Southeast acts such as the Stanley Brothers. The concert in these images was held in 1984 as a celebration and reunion of the radio series, and included several local bluegrass bands. A second jamboree was held the follwing year (see S 1627, Box 5). Images include the Suwannee River Fire Band; The Dixie Jubilees; Big Timber Bluegrass; and Aubrey Fowler. One reel to reel. Recorded during a rebroadcast of the Suwannee River Jamboree radio show (c. 1958-1962) in 1984. Between 1952 and 1962, the Suwannee River Jamboree show -- broadcast from Live Oak, Florida on WNER -- was Florida's largest and best known country music show. It was broadcast live three hours every Saturday night, with 30-minute versions syndicated across the Southeast. The show featured many North Florida and Southeast acts such as the Stanley Brothers (who appeared on the show between 1958 and 1962.) This undated program was rebroadcast as a way to advertise the 1984 Suwannee River Jamboree homecoming concert, held at the Stephen Foster State Folk Culture Center. The concert was held in September 1984 as a homecoming for the original radio series, and included several local bluegrass bands. A similar jamboree was held the following year.

These programs were created in the early 1960s by the Stephen Foster Memorial to promote the park and its activities, as well as to educate the public about Stephen Foster and Florida folk music.

One reel to reel recording (14:20 minutes) Radio program about the 1963 Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair competition, featuring the winner Keitha Holz singing the Foster song, and remarks as well as an original composition by commercial songwriter and contest judge Gerald Marks. There were 21 contestants, and the event culminated in a Jeanie ball. Marks was the composer of "All of Me," and "The Night Shall Be Filled With Music." He also several Broadway shows and motion pictures. These programs were created in the early 1960s by the Stephen Foster Memorial to promote the park and its activities, as well as to educate the public about Stephen Foster and Florida folk music.

One reel to reel recording. (15 minutes). Four short radio stories: 1. Open Thy Lattice, Love (3:30) -- story behind Stephen Foster's first published song. 2. Fletcher Hodges, Jr. (3:46)-- story about the curator of Foster Hall at the University of Pittsburgh, and author of a Foster biography. Hodges was a native of Indiana, where he was asked in 1932 to curate the Eli Lilly and Co.'s collection of Foster materials (20,000 items). He moved with the collection to the University of Pittsburgh in 1937. 3. Masaryktown (3:45) -- story of the Czechoslovakian community, with Jerry Psenka's music. 4. Lem Griffis (4:00) -- sampler of Griffis' humorous stories; who was from the Okeefenokee swamp in South Georgia (the headwaters of the Suwannee River). He was a regular performer at the Festival. These programs were created in the early 1960s by the Stephen Foster Memorial to promote the park and its activities, as well as to educate the public about Stephen Foster and Florida folk music.
