Two audio cassettes. Presentation at the Bartow Public Library, in connection with the Pursuits and Pastimes exhibit, on Florida ranching. Folklorist Dyen began with a history of Florida cattle ranching, including fence laws, cowboy music (including songs by Bob Tinsley), stories (including recording of Bone Mizell story by Frog Smith), brands, and tools used. Cauley, a saddle maker, talks about saddles and their construction. He discusses tools and materials used, types and uses of saddles, as well as the life of a cowman, the use of dogs, and the clothing and tools used in the profession.

Two audio cassettes. Recording of a program for the Jackson County Library on family agriculture and turpentining for the "Pursuits and Pastimes" series. The program, led by Doris Dyen, consists of discussions on basketry; growing herbs and spices; hunting for snakes; folk games; and cultural differences amongst ethnic groups. Includes talks by Fred Williams and Lloyd McMullian. On tape C83-124, McMullian discusses hog farming; preparing and curing hogs; President Hoover and life during the Great Depression; African Americans and voting; company stores; and ways to farm and uses for turpentine.

One reel to reel recording. Boltin served as emcee. The Collins (in their first festival performance) were from Eustis. They sang with their children: Rose, Hurbert, Ronnie, Yolanda, and Crystal. Dekle demonstrated whip cracking. Lazonby, a lawyer, was from Hawthorne. The Bucksnort Barndance Band played clogging music for the Cross Creek Cloggers -- both from Gainesville. Slavin, from Miami Beach, played old time music at his festival.

The Myakka Community Profile Project was conducted between October 1983 and March 1984 through a partnership with the Crowley Museum and Nature Center, and the Florida Folklife Program, funded by the Florida Endowment for the Humanities. The fieldwork and resultant booklet/slideshow, created by museum employee Robert Cottrell and folklorist Pat Waterman, was to profile the lifestyles and values of the Myakka community, located in Southwest Florida in Manatee County. See S 1682 for more information on the project.
