Description
Two proof sheets with 39 black and white images (plus negatives). Based on recommendations from the Florida Folklife Council, the Secretary of State confers Florida Folk Heritage Awards annually. The awards are given to outstanding folk artists and folk culture advocates who have made long-standing contributions to the folk cultural resources of the state. Established in 1985, the program parallels the National Heritage Fellowships. In 1988, Secretary of State Smith presented awards to Stetson Kennedy, Alton Morris, Flora Mae Hunter, and Tom Gaskins. Many of the people in these slides are unidentified

Five color slides. At the time, Bulger was Florida's State Folklorist (between 1976-1989). She later worked for the Southern Arts Federation before being chosen as director of Library of Congress's American Folklife Center in 1999.

One reel to reel recording. The audio quality is poor. Held at Powell Hall because of heavy rains. Boltin emceed the event. Cliff Walden was a radio personality on WGGG in Gainesville. U.S. Rep. Matthews represented the 8th Congressional District from 1953 to 1967. He spoke on patriotism and the need for "states rights" -- but his speech suffers from audio resulting from damage to the reel to reel and is difficult to hear.
