Five proofs with 132 black and white images (plus negatives). This was the first year the award was given out. Held at the Florida State Capitol, Secretary of State George Firestone handed awards out to Boltin, Clark, Billie, Saunders, and Frog Smith. Florida Folklife Program folklorists Bulger and Taylor were also on hand. Other folk artists also were there performing, such as Greek bagpiper Tsimouris.

Includes images of folklorist Peggy Bulger, Secretary of State Jim Smith, folklorist Nancy Nusz, farrier Jim Flaherty, the Southwest Florida Steel Drum Band performing, the Bahia Vista Mennonite Gospel Quartet performing, broom maker Forest Oakes, the Culbreath Family Band, the Bluegrass Country Band, and festival visitors square dancing. Each year at the Florida Folk Festival, the Florida Folklife Program emphasized a particular culture, tradtions, or geographic area.

One proof sheet with 22 black and white images (plus negatives). Images of a reunion concert of the Triumphant Gospel Singers Association. Recordings of the concert (another one was also held on 20 March 1983) can be found on C83-132 through C83-137, and T83-213 through T83-216. Starling served as emcee. During the concert, Jacksonville council member Holzendorf gave out awards to Hawes and Dyen (images 11 through 18). In image 5, folklorists Dyen and Nusz are seen recording the concert.

Three audio cassettes. Present at the meeting: Ron Foreman, Jeanette Cypress, Ormond Loomis, Barbara Beauchamp, Merri Belland and Pat Stafford. The subject of the meeting was the Heritage Awards and changes to be made to the award ceremony and the process surrounding it were discussed. For minutes and details of the meeting, see the S 1579, box 1, folder: Indexes for C87-1 through C87-24. And copies of tapes (but not the minutes)for this meeting can also be found in S 1717, box 2. The Florida Folklife Council (FFC) was created by legislation in 1979 (79-322, SB 1203) within the Department of State to advise the Secretary of State on issues relating to folk arts and folk life as well as stimulate and encourage statewide public interest and participation in folk arts and folklore, sponsor conferences and workshops throughout the state, and make recommendations for the development of a statewide Florida Folk Arts program. The Florida Folklife Council consists of seven members appointed by the Secretary of State for four-year terms.
