Description
One audio cassette. Ilnyckyj was a retired Ukrainian bishop from Fort Port, Florida. The Florida Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1987 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalis, Steve Frangos, Merri Belland, and Barbara Seitz as preliminary research for a joint folk art between the Florida Folklife Program and the Florida Museum of History. The field researchers focused on those areas previously overlooked by FFP staff. The research focused on identifying folk artists and locating appropriate exhibit objects.

One audio cassette. Interview begins on SIDE TWO of tape. Father Baker, priest for the Basilica Cathedral of St. Augustine, discusses the St. Augustine Blessing of the Fleet. He gives details of the strong Italian Catholic population in St. Augustine as well as a general support for religious/cultural events within the city. He elaborates on the symbolism and ceremony of the Blessing, as well as outlining its religious significance. Interview conducted during fieldwork for video documentary on Florida shrimping called Fishing All My Days, and was made by the Florida Folklife Program, and the University of Florida (WUFT-TV). Description
One audio cassette. Hegerty, a chaplain at St. Vincents Hospital, describes the beginnings of the Blessing of the Fleet in St. Augustine, going back to his first encounters with the fishermen of West Augustine and individual boat blessings, to the large annual procession that it became. He discusses the pageantry of the event, as well as the significance behind it. He also discusses the European roots behind the tradition. There are places throughout the interview where Hegerty asks that the tape be turned off. Interview conducted during fieldwork for video documentary on Florida shrimping called Fishing All My Days, and was made by the Florida Folklife Program, and the University of Florida (WUFT-TV).

He discusses Santeria dancing, medicine, food, and philosophy; origins of Santeria; Santeria under Batista, Castro, and in Miami; African origins; apprenticeships; and present customs. The Dade Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1986 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalas, Nancy Nusz and Laurie Sommers in order to identify folk arts and folk artists for the special folklife area at the 34th Annual Florida Folk Festival. The traditions are mainly Haitian, Jamaican, Mexican, Bahaman, Cuban and Jewish and cover a wide range of skills and art forms.

Six color slides. Demonstration of the material culture, practices, and rites of Santeria (The Way of the Saints), a syncretic belief system combining elements of West African religion with Catholicism. Ernesto was an italero, or a high priest of Santeria. Carman was his mother, and made Santeria-related clothing and crafts. For an interview with Pichardo, see S 1576, T85-145 - S85-146. Description
Two audio cassettes. Recording of a Catholic mass and baptismal service in Seville, Florida. The service was held in a Methodist Church that the Mexican American fern farmers used for Catholic services. For images, see S 1577, v. 27, slides 1742-1758. In winter 1985, the Bureau contracted with two folklorists to conduct a folk arts survey of the St. Johns River basin in northeastern Florida. The St. Johns River is the largest and most used river in Florida, supporting much river commerce as well as a modest amount of commercial fishing. Folklorists Mary Anne McDonald and Kathleen Figgen conducted the survey from January through March 1985 under the direction of Folklife Coordinator Blanton Owen and Bureau Chief Ormond Loomis. Documentation compiled in the survey was used to prepare and present the "St. Johns River Basin Folklife Area" at the 1985 Florida Folk Festival.

One audio cassette. Recording of a mass and rosary service in honor of the Virgin of Fatima in the trailer home of the Jose Albarran family. Presided over by Father Jose Narvaez, food and drinks were served to those that came. The service is in Spanish.
