Six color slides. The Florida Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1987 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalis, Steve Fragos, Merri Belland, and Barbara Seitz as preliminary research for a joint folk art between the Florida Folklife Program and the Florida Museum of History. The field researchers focused on those areas previously overlooked by FFP staff. The research focused on identifying folk artists and locating appropriate exhibit objects.

Thirteen color slides. The Folk Arts in Education Project in Palm Beach County was a joint venture between the Palm Beach County School System and the Florida Folklife Program. It was conducted between 1986 and 1987 by folklorist Jan Rosenberg with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to add to existing social studies curriculum. The goal was to impart an appreciation of multi-ethnic traditions and provide a sense of place to the mobile student population. The project focused on the Florida Studies component for fourth grade students. The project consisted of field research to identify local traditions and folk artists, a series of five two-day seminars to acquaint teachers with the use of folklore and folk arts, in-school programs conducted by a folklorist and traditionalist, which included visits by local folk artists. In total, the project involved 15 schools with 779 students.

Twenty-seven color slides. Images are of Wagner playing instruments that he made for students at Mami Agnes Elementary School, including a banjo, guitar, and fiddle. An interview with Wagner can be found in S 1576, Box 22, C86-178/179. Slides 1924 and 1925 are close-up images of his guitar and banjo. The Folk Arts in Education Project in Duval County was a joint venture between the Duval County School System and the Florida Folklife Program. It was started in 1984 by folklorist David Taylor with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to add to existing social studies curricula. The project consisted of field research to identify local traditions and folk artists, a series of five two-day seminars to acquaint teachers with the use of folklore and folk arts, and in-school programs conducted by a folklorist and traditionalist which included visits by local folk artists. Taylor ran it until 1986. In 1988, Gregory Hansen re-initiated it with minor changes.

Mexican pinatas made by Victoria Grimm and her apprentices

Description
Seven color slides. Grimm's apprentices were Maria Garza and Raquel Herrera. Grimm, born in Mexico City, learned to make pinatas from her family. She made two types: ones made completely of papier-mache, and ones with clay pots covered in papier-mache. Pinatas were used during posada celebrations, Mexican Christmas traditions that was observed the nine days before the holiday to represent Mary and Joseph's trek to Bethlehem. The Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program began in 1983 with a NEA grant of $22,000. The program provided an opportunity for master folk artists to share technical skills and cultural knowledge with apprentices in order to keep the tradition alive. Apprentices must have had some experience in the tradition and agreed to train for at least six months. The first project director was Blanton Owen, later replaced by folklorist Peter Roller. The program was continued each year through 2003.

Fifteen color slides. Xiomala Carmona and her daughter Ana learned paper craft in Santiago, Cuba while Nery Castillo and her daughter Vicia learned paper folding in Honduras. Temari is the traditional Japanese art of decorating spheres by winding and lacing colored threads in intricate patterns around a core ball.
