Discusses tarring nets; fishing the St. Johns River; shad fishing; recreational fishing; fishhouses; hoop nets; crabbing; benefits of water hyacinth; changes in riverine environment; typical day of a fisher; and types of fish. In winter 1985, the Bureau contracted with two folklorists to conduct a folk arts survey of the St. Johns River basin in northeastern Florida. The St. Johns River is the largest and most used river in Florida, supporting much river commerce as well as a modest amount of commercial fishing. Folklorists Mary Anne McDonald and Kathleen Figgen conducted the survey from January through March 1985 under the direction of Folklife Coordinator Blanton Owen and Bureau Chief Ormond Loomis. Documentation compiled in the survey was used to prepare and present the 'St. Johns River Basin Folklife Area' at the 1985 Florida Folk Festival.

He discusses his father as a fisher and shrimper; family history; learning the fishing trade; shrimping; clamming; hurricanes; oystering; local businesses; George Kirvin; recreation activities of fishers; oyster canning; Apalachicola life; learning to make nets; net making tools and methods; shrimp trawls; net mending; weather folklore; superstitions; and netmakers like Billy Burbank. Between 1986 and 1987, a partnership between the Florida Folklife Program and the American Folk Center created the Maritime Heritage Survey Project. Focusing on the Gulf and Atlantic fishing cultures, and utilizing photographs, slides, oral histories, and on-site interviews, the survey climaxed with a demonstration area at the 1987 Florida Folk Festival. The three main researchers were Nancy Nusz, Merri Belland, and project director David Taylor. Additional information on the project can be found in Taylor's project files in S 1716.

Jake Stone discusses his early years in shrimping, 1947-1948; his first shrimp boat was the "Jim Dozier"; tells fishing story; discusses shrimping in the present day - differences; family background; shrimp boats he's run; New Smyrna, Florida as "shrimping Mecca"; modern shrimping ports; communication; "heading" shrimp stories; shrimping as a family business; superstitions among fishermen; "oil drip" story; shrimp captain, "Gator Pierce"; fisherman, Ralph Weatherly; fishing territories; electric reels; net-making; old-time net-maker, Anchor Damgard; fisherman, Johnny McDonald; tells fishing and shrimping stories throughout tape. C86-141: Captain Stone discusses various aspects of shrimping and netmaking such as the types of nets he made ("Jubilee" nets, "Joe Lucas" nets, and "Brownie" nets); innovations in his net-making; intricacies of net-making and how they work; seasonal runs of shrimp; decreasing catches of shrimp and rising prices; legends of shark feeding; younger generation's lack of interest in net making; modern shrimping vs. shrimping when Capt. Stone was younger. Interview conducted during fieldwork for video documentary on Florida shrimping called Fishing All My Days, and was made by the Florida Folklife Program, and the University of Florida (WUFT-TV). - One reel to reel recording. Netmaking workshop: Folklorist Taylor interviewed the fishers on net making: techniques, types of nets, materials used, and costs involved. The folklife area in 1987 focused on Maritime folklife, which stemmed from Taylor's work on the 1986 Maritime Heritage Project, and cooperative project between the FFP and the Library of Congress.

He discusses how he began making nets (has been making nets 72 years), the different kinds of material used and different types of nets. He gives a demonstration of net-making and discusses the materials used - castnet needle, mesh board and nylon twine.

He also discusses his work as a fisherman, the fish he has caught and different fishing jobs he's held. He also talks of his experience in building charter boats and rowboats. Herman and Louise Ibach, interviewed by Bob Stone, discuss Scottish Highland Games and the different components of them such as the stone punt, the hammer throw and the sheaf toss. Louise Ibach discusses participants for the Games and divisions in the Games.
