Description
Two audio cassettes. (Copy can be found in S 1576, box 39, tape 31.) Safa was director of the Center of Latin American Studies, 1980-1985. A Columbia University graduate, Safa taught at UF until 1997. She has written extensively about gender and Latin America. In the interview she discusses Latin American influences on Florida and its culture. Side 1 (C82-1): Safa discusses "quince" celebrations, godparents, New Year's Traditions, the close relationship between Florida and the Caribbean, the history of Caribbean immigration in the U.S. and Florida; and modern-day Cuban, Haitian, and Puerto-Rican immigration. Also, Safa presents a historical sketch of Caribbean cultures; Chango, Santeria, and Voodoo religions in Caribbean culture. Side 2 (C82-1): Safa discusses cultural assimilation amongst Caribbean immigrants in the U.S.; rites of passage and celebrations used to reaffirm group identity; "Quinces;" the outlawing of Santeria and other religions in Cuba after the revolution; different US immigrant groups' identification with their Caribbean heritages, like in New York and Miami. Side 1 (C82-2): Safa compares Miami's cultural assimilation when compared with countries like China and India; Cuban immigrants in Florida who immigrated to the US before the 1960s, during Battista's governance; studies on the Mariel boatlift; and Cuban Mafia groups who moved to Florida after Castro's takeover and their role in Florida's exile anti-Castro organizations. She also talks about the importance of retaining traditions for immigrants; the political and economic crises in Caribbean countries; and the immigrants' viewpoints on America.

One audio cassette tape. McKenzie served as emcee. Kazuko Law and Wako Kai continue from C96-97 with their Japanese narrative dance troop. They perform a folk dance about a man who like sto live the high life and Kawachi Otoko Bushi. There is a time for audience participation and a description of things in the folklife building. Catalina Trunk describes the Mexican celebrations of Day of the Dead and death traditions in different parts of Mexico.

One audio cassette recordings. Side A: Catalina Delgado, a trunk and Mexican paper artist and Eileen Brautman, a Jewish paper artist are interviewed by Laurie Sommers. Delgado discusses paper-cutting techniques and how designs are made. Brautman explains traditional and contemporary calligraphy and paper cutting according to the European tradition. She tells of making stories from the Bible, use of animals and other designs and the making of a Ketubah (Jewish marriage contract). Side B: Sonny Treadway (Deerfield Beach, FL), sacred steel guitarist is interviewed by Laurie Sommers. He discusses sacred steel guitar and gospel music as well as his musical influences such as his father, other family members and church musicians. He plays by ear and has written several original songs.

One digital audio tape (DAT). The Florida State Fiddle Contest was held each year at the Festival on Saturdays (the stages varied from year to year). The winners were allowed to perform on the Main Stage that evening. Winners for the Rustic Division: Dave Horton (first), David Swanson (second) and Charlie Burton (third). For the Contemporary Division: Gabriel Lewis (first), Judd Taylor (second), and Elan Shocker (third). The winners of the Junior Division were Tommy Slaughter (first), Ian Malinowsky (second) and Joshua Headly (third). The winners of the Twin Fiddle Division: Trenda & Tommy Slaughter (First); Ian Malinsowky & Elan Chalford (second) and Sharon McInnis & Sandy McIntire (third).
