Apprentices must have had some experience in the tradition and had agreed to train for at least six months. The first project director was Blanton Owen, who was later replaced by folklorist Peter Roller. The program was continued each year through 2003.

Evening view of the St. Johns River

Date
1985-01-27
Description
Five color slides. In winter 1985, the Bureau contracted with two folklorists to conduct a folk arts survey of the St. Johns River basin in northeastern Florida. The St. Johns River is the largest and most used river in Florida, supporting much river commerce as well as a modest amount of commercial fishing. Folklorists Mary Anne McDonald and Kathleen Figgen conducted the survey from January through March 1985 under the direction of Folklife Coordinator Blanton Owen and Bureau Chief Ormond Loomis. Documentation compiled in the survey was used to prepare and present the St. Johns River Basin Folklife Area at the 1985 Florida Folk Festival.

Fire-controlled landscape at the Birdsong Nature Center

Fire-controlled landscape at the Birdsong Nature Center

Date
1989-01
Description
Ten color slides. Nature enthusiasts Ed and Betty Komarek purchased Birdsong Plantation in 1938 from the Dickey family. Over the decades, they became involved with several biologists and conservationists, such as Henry Stoddard. They used prescribed fire to landscape their property. In 1986, they opened the nature center as a not-for-profit organization. Their land serves as a prime example of the use of fire to maintain a longleaf pine landscape, an old folk tradition that was later validated by scientists in the late 20th century.
