Jake Stone discusses his early years in shrimping, 1947-1948; his first shrimp boat was the "Jim Dozier"; tells fishing story; discusses shrimping in the present day - differences; family background; shrimp boats he's run; New Smyrna, Florida as "shrimping Mecca"; modern shrimping ports; communication; "heading" shrimp stories; shrimping as a family business; superstitions among fishermen; "oil drip" story; shrimp captain, "Gator Pierce"; fisherman, Ralph Weatherly; fishing territories; electric reels; net-making; old-time net-maker, Anchor Damgard; fisherman, Johnny McDonald; tells fishing and shrimping stories throughout tape. C86-141: Captain Stone discusses various aspects of shrimping and netmaking such as the types of nets he made ("Jubilee" nets, "Joe Lucas" nets, and "Brownie" nets); innovations in his net-making; intricacies of net-making and how they work; seasonal runs of shrimp; decreasing catches of shrimp and rising prices; legends of shark feeding; younger generation's lack of interest in net making; modern shrimping vs. shrimping when Capt. Stone was younger. Interview conducted during fieldwork for video documentary on Florida shrimping called Fishing All My Days, and was made by the Florida Folklife Program, and the University of Florida (WUFT-TV). C86-145: Bernie Colvin discusses his shrimping experiences, including changes that have occurred in the business over the years; shrimping in the Bay around Panama City; Vietnamese shrimpers in the area; shrimping as recreation and subsistence; state regulations governing shrimping; physical dangers involved in shrimping/boating; traditional shrimping methods; nocturnal shrimping; crew payment. He tells various stories throughout interview. C86-149: Bernie Colvin discusses his personal history and how he got into the shrimping business. He also describes his first shrimping trip and changes in the industry over time; fishing and its benefits during World War II; Candy and Jimmy Carden, net makers; his son Earl, also a shrimper; communication and camaraderie between shrimpers; superstitions; cooking and foodways while on board ship; castnetting. Interview conducted during fieldwork for video documentary on Florida shrimping called Fishing All My Days, and was made by the Florida Folklife Program, and the University of Florida (WUFT-TV). Filman was from Steinhatchee, Herrin was from Mayport, and Bennett was from Welaka. Net making workshop: Folklorist Taylor interviewed the net makers (Smith, Buzier, Mora) about their occupation and training, and how to make nets. Mora was from Cortez, Smith from Port St. Joe, and Buzier was from Apalachicola. The folklife area in 1987 focused on Maritime folklife, which stemmed from Taylor's work on the 1986 Maritime Heritage Project, and cooperative project between the FFP and the Library of Congress.
