- Nine audio cassettes. The theme this year was "Folklife and Immigration." C89-31: Nancy Nusz and Ormond Loomis open the Seminar. Olivia Cadaval is the primary speaker. She opens with a discussion of her family's background and traditions as immigrants. She also discusses her ethnicity as a Latin American; layers of identity; definitions of culture; folk culture and folklife; festivals; aesthetic use of space; identity through items and structures; participant view of folk culture; institutions within the community; material culture and how it is meaningful to us; elite, popular, and folk culture as a continuum. C89-32: Olivia Cadaval continues her discussion focusing on time concept; pop pressure; defines folk culture-groups/communities; ethnicity and material culture; "built environment"; extended family in the neighborhood, community, home, occupation, religion, society, etc.; regionalism; border traditions; stereotypes. She approaches these subjects from a Latin American perspective referring to terms such as comadres and copadres, and subjects such as the Virgen de Guadalupe. C89-33: Olivia Cadaal continues her discussion on stereotypes focusing on such subjects as virgins; significant plants; Spanish bayonet; the piñata. Nancy Nusz conducts/discusses community building. Olivia Cadaval on the immigrant home. C89-34: Continuation of Olivia Cadaval on the immigrant home; discussion of occupational traditions including Curly Dekle and whipmaking; Haitian traditions; society at work; hierarchies; illustration of traditional occupations. C89-35: Discussion of occupations is continued. Ricki Saltzman discusses folk religion and Jewish folklore and ethnicity; foodways in religion; the Jewish religious year and generational upbringing; Jewish cookbooks as showing community value; variation differences between ideal and reality; festive foodways; wedding, birthday, and funeral customs. Specific aspects of the topics mentioned include Eastern Europe; the Passover/Easter; Torah; Mezuzah. C89-36: Riki Saltzman continues her discussion with ways to get children and their families to use/investigate folklore; ritual comparison (Kwanza is used as an example). Seminar attendees form groups of three, interview one another, and discuss results. Olivia Cadaval discusses folk examples of today; shows video clips of neighborhood celebrations seen and discussed; ethnic community celebrations (Corpus Christi, Holy Cross, and comparsa used as examples). C89-37: Olivia Cadaval continues discussion of community celebrations and material culture; toys. She reviews folk culture and material culture and discusses it as applied to folk art (Seminole art used as example). C89-38: Nancy Nusz continues discussion of folk art and discusses examples such as the Quetzal (bird symbolic of Guatemala). Slides are shown. There is an indication that a machine breaks part way into Side B - the index sheet does not specify whether it is tape recorder or slide machine. C89-39: Slideshow of folk artisans discussed.

He spoke, along with some of his students, on research, interviewing, editing, and publishing as an educational tool.

The theme of the two-day seminar was storytelling. Several folklorists gave talks on various aspects of storytelling folklore: David Taylor (storytelling); Pat Waterman (folklife research on stories); Susan Sink (legends and tales); Ethel Glover (storytelling methods); and Thelma Boltin (examples of stories). The main speaker was Dr. Rayna Green, director of the American Indian Program with the Smithsonian Institute. A graduate from the Indian university folklife program, she researched and wrote on Native American culture and images. She also taught at several universities, and published several books. Other speakers included traditional healer Jeanette Cypress and Seminole Tribe of Florida president James Billie.

Hosted by the Florida Folklife Program at the Stephen Foster Center (SFC), the conference included folklorists and historians from the Library of Congress (LOC), Smithsonian Institute (SI), University of Florida, as well as throughout Florida and the South. T78-301: John Roberts, director of the Stephen Foster Center makes opening remarks, along with Norman and Bulger. Session on the History of Florida Folklife by Bulger, Dr. Alton Morris, Dr. Ralph Boggs, and Florida Folk Festival director Thelma Boltin. T78-302: Boltin presentation continued. Plus answer and questions of the session. Session on Current Florida Folklife Program with Dr. Proctor talking on the Oral History Program at the University of Florida. T78-303: Questions for Proctor. Session continues with Dale Olsen talking about Florida ethnomusicology studies, and Bulger on the Florida Folklife Program. T78-304: Bulger continues. Session on the National and Regional centers of folklife with Georganne Fletcher from the Southern Federation of State Arts Agencies; Jabbour from the American Folklife Center; Blackman from Agrirama; and Yerkovich from the NEA. T78-305: Yerkovich continues. Session of Folklore and the Media with Charles Brown of the Folk Arts Media Project of the Charleston Communication Center; and George Reynolds, author of Foxfire. T78-306: Reynolds continues. Bill Ferris speaks on the Center of Southern Folklore. Shows film entitled Four Women Artists. T78-307: Session on Collecting folklife with Ralph Rinzler on the American Folklife Festival; and R. Thomas King on the Florida State Museum. T78-308: King continues. Theodore Grame on the Study Center for American Musicl Pluralism. T78-309: Session on presenting folklife with Pat Waterman on the Applied Anthropology Program at USF; Charles Hall on Agrirama; and Thomson on the Southern Folklore Quarterly. Final session on recommendations, led by Flemming and Bulger. Three concerts were presented in connection with the conference: The McClain Family on 15 January at the Stephen Foster Center (see T78-310); and Jean Ritchie, Alan Jabour, and the Bucksnort Barndance Band at the Lake City American Legion Hall on 14 January (see T78-311 through T78-313); and Jean Ritchie at the Stephen Foster Center on 16 January 1978 (T78-313 and T78-314.) Seminole Video Project: School at Big Cypress

- One video cassette (3/4" tape). Scenes of Big Cypress School, as well as Alligator Alley, Immokalee Reservation and raw footage of surrounding nature and wildlife. The Seminole Video Project was a joint project between the Florida Folklife Program and WFSU-TV. Completed in Spring 1984 and financed by a Florida Endowment for the Humanities grant with the support of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, the project culminated in a thirty-minute documentary entitled "Four Corners of the Earth" which profiled Ethel Santiago, a Seminole craftswoman and tribal representative. The program addressed such issues as cultural retention within contemporary society; the role of women in Seminole society; traditional Seminole foods, arts, and medicine; and the changing emphasis on clan affiliations. The project covered Seminoles on the Big Cypress and Hollywood Reservations and at Immokalee, Florida. Raw video footage, along with the finished product, can be found in S 1615, V84-16 through V-84-24. Sound recordings of the interviews can be found in S 1576, T84-111 - T84-133 and C84-108 - C84-115. Images can be found in S 1577, volume 23.
