Cuban drummer Florencio Baro and apprentice performing at the 1990 Florida Folk Festival (Main Stage)

Date
1990-05-25
Description
One reel to reel recording. Fitchen served as emcee. Parada and Hernandez apprenticed under drummer Baro in 1990 through the FFP Apprenticeship program. The Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program began in 1983 with a NEA grant of $22,000. The program provided an opportunity for master folk artists to share technical skills and cultural knowledge with apprentices in order to keep the tradition alive. Apprentices must have had some experience in the tradition and agreed to train for at least six months. The first project director was Blanton Owen, later replaced by folklorist Peter Roller. The program was continued each year through 2003.

Date

Description
One reel to reel recording. NOTE: Due to technical problems with the original reels the recording quality of the 1971 Florida Folk Festival is exceptionally poor. Boltin served as emcee. (The last five tracks of the reel -- not listed here -- are from the Friday afternoon program. See separate entry for description.) The first few tracks may have been from the previous day's program (Thursday, 6 May, 1971). The reel indexes are unclear. The Schillings were from Cosby, Tennessee. Jean played dulcimer. The Orange Blossom Bluegrass were from Tampa. Nelson lived in Gainesville. Pavitt lived in Juneau, Alaska. The Good Guys were based out of West Palm Beach. Fiddler Stephens lived in Panama City. Starker played the steel drums.
