Two proof sheets with seventy-two black and white images, plus negatives. Images of the Florida Folk Heritage Awards (Sacred Steel guitar player Willie Eason and Everglades skiff Glen Simmons), the Folklife Area (Klezmer musician Bronsztein, gospel group the Versiteers, musician Walker, storyteller Llewellyn, bluegrass group Tru-Blu Grass, Greek-dance group the Dionysus Dancers, and the Colombian Folklore Group, the Dunedin Pipe Band, Seminole storyteller Jumper, Cuban conga dancer Los Rumberos Unidos, the Filipino Community Choir, an whip maker Curly Dekle), and the Amphitheater stage (Bronsztein, Nicaraguan-American Toro Huaco Dance Group, and old-time musician Culbreath.)

Description
Two audio cassettes. Emelia Fernandez and her daughter Irene discusses their lives and the comparsas tradition. Fernandez founded a comparsas dance troupe in Key West. Danny Acosta led the band that accompanied the dances. The Cuban dance has African roots, and is usually performed in long conga lines. Dancers dress in elaborate, ruffled outfits. The tradition began in Key West in 1938. Emelia herself arrived in Florida in 1959. She and her daughter Irene revived the dance tradition in the early 1990s. For images of their performance, see S 1577, v. 60, slides S92-557 - S92-567. The Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program began in 1983 with a NEA grant of $22,000. The program provided an opportunity for master folk artists to share technical skills and cultural knowledge with apprentices in order to keep the tradition alive. Apprentices must have had some experience in the tradition and agreed to train for at least six months. The first project director was Blanton Owen, later replaced by folklorist Peter Roller. The program was continued each year through 2004.

Description
One audio cassette tape. Johnny Conga continues from C96-112 with his personal history. He then discusses various rhythms associated with conga drumming such as comparsa (Cuba), plena (Puerto Rico), bomba (Puerto Rico), rumba (Cuba), abaqua (Afro-Cuban), agogo and samba (Brazil). He also discusses the "Mongo" style of playing, the calabash and Carnival. He plays a Mambo. The Rondalla Filipino String Band gives a history and explanation of the band and the instrument, banduria.

One audio cassette tape. Lilian Arce and Grupo Folklorico continue from C96-111 with the merengue. They also perform a Chilean dance, "La Cueca", and the Mexican Hat Dance ("Jarabe Tapatio"). Arce talks about the group and solicits audience participation in dancing - they learn a Colombian dance. Johnny Conga (Miami, FL) discusses percussion and Hispanic folklore along with his personal history and the history of the conga drum.
