Description
Three DAT tapes. Digital audio tapes (DAT) generated by fieldwork undertaken to document the folklife of the Callahan neighborhood of Orlando, Florida. Results of the fieldwork were incorporated into the "Folklife Of Central Florida" folklife theme area at the 1994 Florida Folk Festival. The tapes feature African-American hymn lining and blues, folk tales, and children's games. Images of the project can be found in folder 1.

Three reel to reels. Interview with Florida marine biologist Dr. Ingle. Ingle worked for years with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. He discusses the history of Apalachicola; the history of fishing in the area; immigration to the town; the marine biology of Apalachicola Bay; oystering; local political culture; food habits of area; his career as a marine biologist; types of boats; and changes to the local ecosystems. A partial copy of the interview can be found at the Library of Congress' American Folk Center Archive (AFS 26,782A12). Between 1986 and 1987, a partnership between the Florida Folklife Program and the American Folk Center created the Maritime Heritage Survey Project. Focusing on the Gulf and Atlantic fishing cultures, and utilizing photographs, slides, oral histories, and on-site interviews, the survey climaxed with a demonstration area at the 1987 Florida Folk Festival. The three main researchers were Nancy Nusz, Merri Belland, and project director David Taylor. Additional information on the project can be found in Taylor's project files in S 1716.

One audio cassette. Interview with fernery worker Marie Castillo, a Mexican migrant. Recorded in her kitchen, Castillo discussed Mexican migration patterns; fern farming; pinata making; religion; adjusting to Florida; family history; music; and community rites. In winter 1985, the Bureau contracted with two folklorists to conduct a folk arts survey of the St. Johns River basin in northeastern Florida. The St. Johns River is the largest and most used river in Florida, supporting much river commerce as well as a modest amount of commercial fishing. Folklorists Mary Anne McDonald and Kathleen Figgen conducted the survey from January through March 1985 under the direction of Folklife Coordinator Blanton Owen and Bureau Chief Ormond Loomis. Documentation compiled in the survey was used to prepare and present the 'St. Johns River Basin Folklife Area' at the 1985 Florida Folk Festival.

Two reel to reels. Carlton discusses railroads, land holdings, dipping vats, old rural communities, the Old Myakka Trail, environmental laws, and water conservation. The Myakka Community Profile Project was conducted between October 1983 and March 1984 through a partnership with the Crowley Museum and Nature Center, and the Florida Folklife Program, funded by the Florida Endowment for the Humanities. The fieldwork and resultant booklet/slideshow, created by museum employee Robert Cottrell and folklorist Pat Waterman, was to profile the lifestyles and values of the Myakka community, located in Southwest Florida in Manatee County.
