He discusses his education in Jewish schools; his family background; being discovered in Miami at 15 by Al Jolson; travelling with Jolson; Yiddish theater; sources of material for his act; Miami night clubs; Martha Raye; cantorial work; George Jessel; and types of shows. The term vaudeville was an American word coined in the 1840s, and refers to a variety show comprised of a series of unconnected acts (singing, comedy, dancing, etc.). The Dade Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1986 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalas, Nancy Nusz and Laurie Sommers in order to identify folk arts and folk artists for the special folklife area at the 34th Annual Florida Folk Festival. The traditions are mainly Haitian, Jamaican, Mexican, Bahamian, Cuban and Jewish and cover a wide range of skills and art forms.
