Description
One audio cassette. Born in the Everglades and 74 years old at the time of the interview, Jimmie (through interpreter Jumper) discusses designing and making Seminole skirts and other garmets. Jimmie describes the Seminole words for "design," "skirt" and "top," and talks about the cross design on her skirt, other types of skirt designs, sewing with strips of colorful cloth, rick-rac, teaching her children and grandchildren the craft, and men in the tribe who sew, like Jimmie Osceola. In addition, she discusses the Green Corn Dance, playing the stickball game, women hunters, gardening, singing Christian songs, learning to sew from her mother, and living in a chickee.

Interview with comparsa dancers Irene and Emelia Fernandez

Two audio cassettes. Emelia Fernandez and her daughter Irene discusses their lives and the comparsas tradition. Fernandez founded a comparsas dance troupe in Key West. Danny Acosta led the band that accompanied the dances. The Cuban dance has African roots, and is usually performed in long conga lines. Dancers dress in elaborate, ruffled outfits. The tradition began in Key West in 1938. Emelia herself arrived in Florida in 1959. She and her daughter Irene revived the dance tradition in the early 1990s. For images of their performance, see S 1577, v. 60, slides S92-557 - S92-567. The Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program began in 1983 with a NEA grant of $22,000. The program provided an opportunity for master folk artists to share technical skills and cultural knowledge with apprentices in order to keep the tradition alive. Apprentices must have had some experience in the tradition and agreed to train for at least six months. The first project director was Blanton Owen, later replaced by folklorist Peter Roller. The program was continued each year through 2004.

She also describes her childhood; her family; the Seminole drink sofke; childhood stories; differences between Creek and Seminole peoples; hair styles; and Seminole healing. The recordings were created for the Florida Folklife Program's Seminole Slide and Tape Project, a program sponsored by the American Express Company in 1982-1983 to create two educational slide/tape programs for use by schools, community groups, and other educational outlets. One program dealt with sweetgrass basket making; the other on traditional Seminole patchwork. Recordings of the finished program tapes can be found in S 1576, Box 10. Teacher guides, program scripts, and documentation of the project can be found in S 1595, Box 1.

Farmand discusses moving to Florida at age 21; her father-in-law working in the South as a salesman; life in Bethlehem and South America; learning embroidery; patterns and designs; symbolism; Palestinian clothing; Ramallah-American Clubs; Palestinian community in Jacksonville; dating and marriage practices; naming traditions; her husband Kamel talked about running a grocery store and sandwich shop; Arabic music; Christianity among Palestinians; and life in the U.S. Images of Farmand can be found in S 1577, v.36. The Folk Arts in Education Project in Duval County was a joint venture between the Duval County School System and the Florida Folklife Program. It was started in 1984 by folklorist David Taylor with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to add to existing social studies curriculum. The project consisted of field research to identify local traditions and folk artists, a series of five two-day seminars to acquaint teachers with the use of folklore and folk arts, in-school programs conducted by a folklorist and traditionalist, which included visits by local folk artists. Taylor ran it until 1986. In 1988, Gregory Hansen re-initiated it with minor changes.
