Description
Eleven color slides. The Gomez family live on the Miccosukee Reservation. Back strap weaving is a Mexican-Mayan tradition that involves a portable loom, allowing the weaver to work in any location. The Dade Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1985 and 1986 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalas, Nancy Nusz and Laurie Sommers in order to identify folk arts and folk artists for the special folklife area at the 34th Annual Florida Folk Festival. The traditions are mainly Haitian, Jamaican, Mexican, Bahamian, Cuban and Jewish and cover a wide range of skills and art forms.

111 color slides. Images of the Fiesta La Primavera, including various Mexican American bands, a Florida-based Mexican dance group (Grupo Sevezz), and local Mexican American residents dancing. For recordings of the Festival, see S 1624, box 3, tapes 5-8. In 1992, the Palm Beach Community College contracted the Florida Folklife Program to conduct ten days of fieldwork in March 1992 around Lake Okeechobee for a Lakefront Legacy Festival later that year (16 May 1992). Headed up by FFP folklorist Debbie Fant, and assisted by Robert Stone and Robert Shanafelt, the fieldwork involved 26 informants, slides, print images and recorded interviews. In the end, the FFP recommended seven people for festival participation.

Ten 8x12 color images. Duplicates of earlier fieldwork photographs, these prints were created for the Library Folklife Program, Pursuits and Pastimes. Includes Wilbert Gavin and Hawk Jackson driving tour boats at Wakulla Springs, Joe Klotz driving a boat at Silver Springs, a woman in a quince dress, Edenfield with his hunting dogs, Jones making fishing lures, Phem making a rice basket, Sheppard making a whip, Vietnamese dancers at the Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival, and a worker making a citrus ladder. A traveling exhibit concerning the occupational groups in Florida relating to tourism and recreation. The exhibit used text and images from the Folklife Program's fieldwork files. There was also a booklet that accompanied the exhibit (found in S 1606, box 2, folder 5). More images of the exhibit can be found in S 1606, box 2, folder 1, and box 1, folder 9.

Forty-four color slides. Images from a Cambodian New Years celebration for the Year of the Tiger. Includes child dancers performing traditional dances (e.g. the Dancing Stone, the Celestial Dance, Legend of Mak Thoeung, and the Golden Fish) dressed in traditional Cambodian clothing. The Folk Arts in Education Project in Duval County was a joint venture between the Duval County School System and the Florida Folklife Program. It was started in 1984 by folklorist David Taylor with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to add to existing social studies curriculum. The project consisted of field research to identify local traditions and folk artists, a series of five two-day seminars to acquaint teachers with the use of folklore and folk arts, in-school programs conducted by a folklorist and traditionalist, which included visits by local folk artists. Taylor ran it until 1986. In 1988, Gregory Hansen re-initiated it with minor changes.
