Interview with blues singer/pianist Ida Goodson

Date: 1981-11-03
Description: Four reel to reels. Interview with singer and pianist Ida Goodson. Born and raised in Pensacola, she toured and recorded with various blues and jazz bands in the late 1920s and 1930s, and later worked for a lumber company for 35 years, while still playing the nightclubs. She converted to Christianity in 1960 and began playing gospel music. In the interview, she discusses her family; her sisters experiences in the music business; learning to play piano; her first song; blues, Dixieland, and jazz music in the 1920s and 1930s; touring Alabama and Georgia in the 1930s; Florida nightclubs; her marriage in 1927; her children's involvement in music; growing up in the Baptist Church and her religious reawakening in the 1960s; recording in New Orleans; games she played as a child; and May Day and Mardi Gras celebrations in Pensacola. Copied onto audiocassettes C83-1, C83-2, C83-3, and C83-4.

Description: Six reel to reel recordings. The convention was founded in 1928, and performs four times a year. Shaped Note singing was an a capella style of church music that utilized shapes to represent notes (fa-so-la-mi) for untrained and even illiterate church members. Only four notes were used in the hymns. An old Anglican practice, English colonists first brought the tradition over to North American in the 1600s. These are field recordings from the Florida Record Project. That project, along with work for the North Florida Project, resulted in the two-album recording, Drop On Down in Florida.

Florida Memory is a digital outreach program providing free online access to select archival records from collections housed in the State Library and Archives of Florida. Florida Memory digitizes materials that illuminate the state's history and culture.

Florida Memory is funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Florida's LSTA program is administered by the Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services.

For FY2022-23, the percentage of total costs for the Florida Memory program financed with federal money is 66%; the federal dollar amount to be spent on the program is $646,422. This program does not receive any non-governmental funding.
