Twenty color slides. Images taken as part of the Seminole Slide and Tape Project at Big Cypress Reservation, located 45 miles south of Fort Lauderdale. Slides are numbered 1-20. Big Cypress reservation was created in the 1930s, and is one of three Seminole reservations in Florida. 1-3: grass basket created by unknown Seminole; 4-20: Chickee home being built.

Images taken on the Brighten and Hollywood Seminole Reservations of three generations of the Billie family women: Lottie Shore, Nancy Billie, and Polly Billie. Also includes images of their houses and neighbors. Proof sheets are numbered 1 through 8. Sheet 1: Nancy Billie (in pull-over and jeans) and her mother Lottie Shore (in traditional Seminole dress). Brighten Reservation. 34 images. Sheet 2: Polly Billie (daughter of Nancy Billie) in her home in Hollywood. 35 images. Sheet 3: Polly Billie talking and sewing in her home. 32 images. Sheet 4: Nancy Billie and her vehicle. Also images of local community. Sheet 5: Seminole school children; Lottie Shore in traditional dress and jewelry; Everglades skiff. 35 images. One proof sheet with twenty-seven images plus negatives. George (Junior) Mills showing Owen the site of the Seminole annual Green Corn Dance near the El Maximo Ranch. Chickees (traditional Seminole dwellings) are visible. Images created as fieldwork for the apprenticeship program. The Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program began in 1983 with a NEA grant of $22,000. The program provided an opportunity for master folk artists to share technical skills and cultural knowledge with apprentices in order to keep the tradition alive. Apprentices must have had some experience in the tradition and agreed to train for at least six months. The first project director was Blanton Owen, who was later replaced by folklorist Peter Roller. The program was continued each year through 2003.

Fifty-nine color slides. Images of the Tamiami Trail leading into the Miccosukke Reservation (Mikasuki), and within the reservation. Includes images of chickees; reservation buildings; items for sale to tourists; sign for a local restaurant; Everglades canals; airboats; and food cooking over an open fire. The images were created for the Florida Folklife Program's Seminole Slide and Tape Project, a program sponsored by the American Express Company in 1982-1983 to create two educational slide/tape programs for use by schools, community groups, and other educational outlets. One program dealt with sweetgrass basket making; the other on traditional Seminole patchwork. Recordings of the finished program tapes can be found in S 1576, Box 10. Teacher guides, program scripts, and documentation of the project can be found in S 1595, Box 1.
