Interview with musical instrument maker Dick Wagner

- Two audio cassettes. Wagner discusses his Georgia origins; his education at UNF; learning instrument making from his father as a child; repairing instruments; playing the cello and various other stringed instruments; bass, fiddle, banjo, guitar; knife making; toy making; making guitars, banjoes, violins, and dulcimers; various inlays; Stradivarius and his techniques; patterns; and prices charged. Images of Wagner can be found in S 1577, v. 37. The Folk Arts in Education Project in Duval County was a joint venture between the Duval County School System and the Florida Folklife Program. It was started in 1984 by folklorist David Taylor with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to add to existing social studies curriculum. The project consisted of field research to identify local traditions and folk artists, a series of five two-day seminars to acquaint teachers with the use of folklore and folk arts, and in-school programs conducted by a folklorist and traditionalist which included visits by local folk artists. Taylor ran it until 1986. In 1988, Gregory Hansen re-initiated it with minor changes.

- Two audio cassettes. Interview with the boat builder at his boat shop. Shiver discusses early life in Franklin County; family fishing; hunting; learning to build boats; types of boats; boatbuilding techniques and materials; timber; uses of boats; religion; and the economics of boat building. Copy of the interview can also be found at the Library of Congress' American Folklife Archive (AFS 26,806A18-42, B). Between 1986 and 1987, a partnership between the Florida Folklife Program and the American Folk Center created the Maritime Heritage Survey Project. Focusing on the Gulf and Atlantic fishing cultures, and utilizing photographs, slides, oral histories, and on-site interviews, the survey climaxed with a demonstration area at the 1987 Florida Folk Festival. The three main researchers were Nancy Nusz, Merri Belland, and project director David Taylor. Additional information on the project can be found in Taylor's project files in S 1716.

Robert James Rudd interview for the Palm Beach County Folk Arts in Education Project

- Three audio cassettes. A former construction worker who was born in Boynton Beach, Rudd built wicker furniture from cypress. Originally the cypress was local, but as development increased, he began acquiring the wood areas north of him. Few power tools were used to make the furniture. In the interview he discusses his father's furniture making career; types of furniture made; tools used; selling furniture; growing during the Depression in South Florida; Cedar Key; the loss of timber sources; the Florida East Coast railway; his career in the US Navy; frog and alligator hunting; snakes; and furniture made from grapevine.

- Two audio casettes. Symonette, the son of pioneer Palm Beach fisher Winifred Symonette, was born in Rivera Beach, and fished until 1966. By the time of the interview, he was a carpenter. He discusses learning fishing from his father at 6; the fishing industry in the 1930s through 1960s; boating; seasonal fishing; types of fishes caught; gill netting; regulations; tackle involved; and moving to carpentry in the 1960s.

The Florida Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1987 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalis, Steve Frangos, Merri Belland, and Barbara Seitz as preliminary research for a joint folk art project between the Florida Folklife Program and the Florida Museum of History. The field researchers focused on those areas previously overlooked by FFP staff. The research focused on identifying folk artists and locating appropriate exhibit objects.

Yo-yo quilt were quilts made from several circular swatches of cloth swen together. P79-682 Cabinet maker Kjell Lunestad of St. Augustine. P79-683 Reverend Thurlow Reed of Key West playing music with a conch shell. P79-684 Jay Abner in front of his restaurant in White Springs. Karl Holland of the Florida Dept. of Commerce took the photographs. He often worked for the Florida Folk Festival, in which he woudl send all unused Commerce photos to the Florida Folklife Program.

Boatbuilder Squeaky Mullis with his boats

- Six color slides. Mullis in his workshop with boats he was building. Mullis was a self-taught boatbuilder who learned the craft by imitating Myron Warr's boats. He uses both wood and fiberglass for his boats. His boat bulding business was called Hulls by Mullis. In winter 1985, the Bureau contracted with two folklorists to conduct a folk arts survey of the St. Johns River basin in northeastern Florida. The St. Johns River is the largest and most used river in Florida, supporting much river commerce as well as a modest amount of commercial fishing. Folklorists Mary Anne McDonald and Kathleen Figgen conducted the survey from January through March 1985 under the direction of Folklife Coordinator Blanton Owen and Bureau Chief Ormond Loomis. Documentation compiled in the survey was used to prepare and present the 'St. Johns River Basin Folklife Area' at the 1985 Florida Folk Festival.
