Two reel to reels (copied onto audio cassette: C86-48 and C86-158.) Interview with Everglades native, hunter, and boat builder Simmons. He discusses hunting alligators; trapping otters and other animals; trading with Seminole Indians; life during the Depression; Everglades drainage; building skiffs; dug out canoes; and camping in the Everglades. The Metro-Dade Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1986 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalas, Nancy Nusz and Laurie Sommers in order to identify folk arts and folk artists for the special folklife area at the 34th Annual Florida Folk Festival. The traditions are mainly Haitian, Jamaican, Mexican, Bahamian, Cuban and Jewish and cover a wide range of skills and art forms.

Two audio cassettes. Interview with the boat builder at his boat shop. Shiver discusses early life in Franklin County; family fishing; hunting; learning to build boats; types of boats; boatbuilding techniques and materials; timber; uses of boats; religion; and the economics of boat building. Copy of the interview can also be found at the Library of Congress' American Folklife Archive (AFS 26,806A18-42, B). Between 1986 and 1987, a partnership between the Florida Folklife Program and the American Folk Center created the Maritime Heritage Survey Project. Focusing on the Gulf and Atlantic fishing cultures, and utilizing photographs, slides, oral histories, and on-site interviews, the survey climaxed with a demonstration area at the 1987 Florida Folk Festival. The three main researchers were Nancy Nusz, Merri Belland, and project director David Taylor. Additional information on the project can be found in Taylor's project files in S 1716.

The boatbuilder discusses his career as a commercial fisher (shrimper); working on a Louisiana oil rig; boatbuilding; types of fishing boats; local boat builders; oyster skiffs; gill net boats; and of learning his craft. Duplicate copy of the interview can be found on audio cassette in S 1592, box 8, tapes 11-12; also at the Library of Congress' American Folk Center archive (AFS 26,804A13-57, B). One digital audio tape(DAT). Rozar served as emcee. Steel guitarist Eason, needleworker Horvath, and sfiff boat builder Simmons were awarded the 1995 Florida Folk Heritage Awards. Diddley, Tucker, and Mortham made speeches. Based on recommendations from the Florida Folklife Council, the Secretary of State confers Florida Folk Heritage Awards annually. The awards are given to outstanding folk artists and folk culture advocates who have made long-standing contributions to the folk cultural resources of the state. Established in 1985, the program parallels the National Heritage Fellowships.

Two audio cassettes. Simmons discusses boatbuilding and his lfie. For more information see S 1644, box 10, folder 11. The Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program began in 1983 with a NEA grant of $22,000. The program provided an opportunity for master folk artists to share technical skills and cultural knowledge with apprentices in order to keep the tradition alive. Apprentices must have had some experience in the tradition and agreed to train for at least six months. The first project director was Blanton Owen, later replaced by first folklorist Peter Roller, then folklorist Robert Stone. The program was continued each year through 2004.
