Description
Twenty color slides. Held in the Capitol rotunda, the Florida Folk Heritage Awards were given to McClain, Edward Flemming, and Morgan. The ceremony also included dancing and music. Based on recommendations from the Florida Folklife Council, the Secretary of State confers Florida Folk Heritage Awards annually. The awards are given to outstanding folk artists and folk culture advocates who have made long-standing contributions to the folk cultural resources of the state. Established in 1985, the program parallels the National Heritage Fellowships.

Description
One proof sheet with 18 black and white images (plus negatives). Award ceremony for blues singer Mary McClain. Known as Diamond Teeth Mary for the jewels she placed in her teeth in the 1940s, Mary was born in West Virginia, and always claimed to be the half sister of fellow blues singer Bessie Smith. In 1918, she moved to Florida's Gulf Coast. During her later years, she lived in Bradenton, Florida. Although McClain was a popular performer in the 1920s and 1930s, she stopped performing the blues for many years. She was rediscovered by the Florida Folklife Program in the 1980s. In 1986, she won the Florida Folk Heritage Award in 1986. She died on 4 April 2000.

One proof sheet with seven black and white images, plus negatives. Images of Carl Allen receiving the Folk Heritage Award, presented by the Florida Folklife Program. Born 13 February 1918, Allen was awarded for his efforts to preserve "Cracker" culture through his restaurant and his newspaper columns. He also promoted bluegrass music throughout Florida with his restaurant, Allen's Historical Cafe, which featured live bluegrass music. 1-4: Rep. Fred Lewis, Carl Allen, and K. Monahan; 5: Rep. Fred Jones, Carl Allen, and Troy Green; 6-7: Carl Allen.

Nine color prints. McCormick, a Creek Indian from a sharecropper family in Alabama and Georgia, played country and Hawaiian music in the 1930s. He gave famed country star Hank Williams his first job, and they remained lifelong friends. He also invented and patented the four-necked steel guitar. (Steel guitars at the time were also called Hawaiian guitars.) He won the 1994 Florida Folk Heritage Award.

The Florida Folk Heritage Awards were given to significant tradition bearers and advocates. Recipients are chosen by the Florida Folklife Council, and given out by the Secretary of State's office.

One reel to reel recording. Walker served as emcee. The 1989 awards were dedicated by Secretary of State Smith to Marjorie Rawlings and Zora Neale Hurston. The winners were E. W. Carswell, Nikitas Tsimouris, and Robert Wise. Nikitas' son, Tony (Antonio) accepted for him.

Recipients are chosen by the Florida Folklife Council, and given out by the Secretary of State's office. In 1994, FHA recipients were Walton, McCormick, Hollis, and Gianaros. The other recipient from that year was Seminole advocate and storyteller Betty Mau Jumper is not pictured. Many of the slides are very dark.
