One reel to reel recording. Fishing stories workshop: Commerical fishers (Buzier from Apalachicola, and Singleton from Mayport) told tales and personal stories from the fishing industry. The folklife area in 1987 focused on Maritime folklife, which stemmed from Taylor's work on the 1986 Maritime Heritage Project, and cooperative project between the FFP and the Library of Congress.

The folklife area in 1987 focused on Maritime folklife, which stemmed from Taylor's work on the 1986 Maritime Heritage Project, and cooperative project between the FFP and the Library of Congress.

Four audio cassettes. Meeting between project participants and the project's advisory committee to review and revise the project's publication, Documenting Maritime Folklife: An Introductory Guide. In addition to a discussion of the Florida Maritime Project, the recordings provide insight into disciplinary debates over the nature of folklife. Includes discussion of amateur versus professional folklorists/researchers, the use of oral history, the project's aims and goals, the philosophy and politics behind folklife, and the conflicts between history, anthropology, and folklife. Participants include maritime historian, Fleetwood, historians Hickerson and Morris, archaeologist Miller, anthropologists Parades, Wickman, and Stewart, biologist Scott, folklorists Gilmore, Johnson, Taylor, Michael, and Loomis. Between 1986 and 1987, a partnership between the Florida Folklife Program and the American Folk Center created the Maritime Heritage Survey Project. Focusing on the Gulf and Atlantic fishing cultures, and utilizing photographs, slides, oral histories, and on-site interviews, the survey climaxed with a demonstration area at the 1987 Florida Folk Festival. Description
Five proofs with 132 black and white images (plus negatives). This was the first year the award was given out. Held at the Florida State Capitol, Secretary of State George Firestone handed awards out to Boltin, Clark, Billie, Saunders, and Frog Smith. Florida Folklife Program folklorists Bulger and Taylor were also on hand. Other folk artists also were there performing, such as Greek bagpiper Tsimouris.
