Description: One reel to reel recording. Boltin served as emcee. Malkine was from Shady, New York. The Mitchells were from Washington DC and played dulcimers. The Hallmans were from Greenville, SC. Muller was from Lake Mary, and Tillinghast was from Hollywood. Burnstine, wife of the late Bob Beers, was from Petersburg, New York (she rant he Fox Hollow Folk Festival until 1980.) John Huber was from Knoxville, Tennessee. Flemming was from Dade City. Dirt Kickers was a string band from Tallahassee. The Georgia Sea Island Singers (Jones & Quimby) were from Brunswick, Georgia.

Frank Mitchell interview for the North Florida Folklife Project

Description: One reel-to-reel recording. Mitchell, born in Greensboro, Alabama, first moved to Florida in 1949. Eventually, he was hired by Capells Shoe Store to shine (and later repair) shoes. Florida Folk Festival director Thelma Boltin discovered him in the early 1970s, and he performed at several festivals thereafter. He does not sing (he usually has a harmonica player accompany him) but rather creates a syncopated beat with his rag. In the interview, he discusses his early life, moving to Florida, working at the shoe store, performing his shoe shine rag, and gives examples of his skill.

Florida Memory is a digital outreach program providing free online access to select archival records from collections housed in the State Library and Archives of Florida. Florida Memory digitizes materials that illuminate the state's history and culture.

Florida Memory is funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Florida's LSTA program is administered by the Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services.

For FY2024-25, the percentage of total costs for the Florida Memory program financed with federal money is 66%; the federal dollar amount to be spent on the program is $614,955. This program does not receive any non-governmental funding.
