Music performances at the Mexican Independence festival

Date
1985-09-15
Description
Eleven color slides. While the event celebrated actually occurred on 16 September 1810, most Mexican American communties begin observations on 15 September with an El Grito -- a celebration featuring parades, music, and dancing. The Dade Folk Arts Survey was conducted in 1985 and 1986 by folklorists Tina Bucuvalas, Nancy Nusz and Laurie Sommers in order to identify folk arts and folk artists for the special folklife area at the 34th Annual Florida Folk Festival. The traditions are mainly Haitian, Jamaican, Mexican, Bahamian, Cuban and Jewish and cover a wide range of skills and art forms.
