Description
One audio cassette. Baird served as emcee. The Florida State Fiddle Contest was held each year at the Festival on Saturdays (the stages varied from year to year). The winners were allowed to perform on the Main Stage that evening. The contest opened with the Omaha String Band (Baird, Dave Moreland, Lloyd Baldwin, and Bill Barton), followed by the various competition categories, and concluded with the judges performing Soldiers Joy. The judges were Stapleton, Robertson, and Brophy.

One digital audio tape (DAT). The Florida State Fiddle Contest was held each year at the Festival on Saturdays (the stages varied from year to year). The winners were allowed to perform on the Main Stage that evening. The winners for the Junior Division (see D93-36) were Martin Johnson (first), Ian Malinsowksi (second) and Aaron Adelson (third); the Rustic Division (also on D93-36) winners were Mike Stapleton (first), Lindsey Smith (second), and Tom Van Truse (third); Contemporary Division (featured on this tape) winners were Cindy Brophy (first), Clair Davis (second) and Ash Reader (third); and the Twin Fiddle Division (also on this tape) winners were Dan Green/Tammy Murray (first), Mary Carahan/Mary Gordon (second), and Allan Hood/John Gerber (third). There were also several fiddling demonstrations held in between the divisions (Bob & Dana Kogut, Bob Murphy, and Amy Cox).

One digital audio tape (DAT). Williams served as emcee. The first three songs the Versiteers played (not listed here) were not recorded due to equipment failure. Mortham was Secretary of State at the time; the Florida Folklife Program and festival fell under her jurisdiction. She officially recognized McLean as a Florida Artist. This was followed by a McLean tribute, including stories and performances by Southwind, Fitchen, Frank & Ann Thomas, Kennedy, Todd, and Williams. Singer-songwriter Will McLean was often called the 'Father of Florida Folk.' The Black Hat Troubadour, a nickname for the hat he usually wore, authored over 3500 songs, and was a national figure on the folk music scene. A fifth generation Floridian, he died in 1990, the year after he won the Florida Folk Heritage award. Grooms played with Dennis Devine (guitar), Waye Martin (fiddle), Dan Peterson (bass) among others.

One digital audio tape (DAT). Matthews, filling for Secretary of State Katherine Harris, was director of the Division of Historic Resources (within which the Florida Folklife Program was located). She announced all winners. The 2000 Heritage awards went to Joseph Kilgore (Dade City cast net maker) and Joe Zeytoonian (of Margate, Fl, oud player). The winners of the State Fiddlers Competition were Brett Watkins, first place; Emma Harbit, second place; and Lee Staley, third place [Junior division]; Denise Peterson, first place; Trent Watkins, second place; and Joshua Headley, third place [Contemporary division); Cathy Agar and Ian Malinowski, first place; Sharon Hartman & Andy Thomas,s econd place; and Debbie Zanders & George Leedham, third place [Twin fiddle); and Sharon Hartman, first place [Rrustic fiddle). Based on recommendations from the Florida Folklife Council, the Secretary of State confers Florida Folk Heritage Awards annually. The awards are given to outstanding folk artists and folk culture advocates who have made long-standing contributions to the folk cultural resources of the state. Established in 1985, the program parallels the National Heritage Fellowships. The Florida State Fiddle Contest was held each year at the Festival on Saturdays (the stages varied from year to year). The winners were announced on the Main Stage that evening.

Winners of the 2001 Florida Folk Heritage Awards dug-out canoe maker Bobby Henry, Russian iconographer Alexander Jasiukowicz, Irish fiddler James Kelly, traditional Hawaiian artist Henry Ohumukini, fiddler Richard Seaman, and folk singer/songwriter Jeanie Fitchen. Based on recommendations from the Florida Folklife Council, the Secretary of State confers Florida Folk Heritage Awards annually.
