The Florida Folklife Council (FFC) was created by legislation in 1979 (79-322, SB 1203) within the Department of State to advise the Secretary of State on issues relating to folk arts and folk life as well as stimulate and encourage statewide public interest and participation in folk arts and folklore, sponsor conferences and workshops throughout the state, and make recommendations for the development of a statewide Florida Folk Arts program. The Florida Folklife Council consists of seven members appointed by the Secretary of State for four-year terms.

One audio cassette recording. C92-15: Index indicates that recording device stopped and batteries were replaced resulting in the loss of some of the Dekle/Beauchamp discussion - an outline can be found on the index sheet for C92-15. C92-16: Curly Dekle continues discussion of Florida Folk Festival; Beth Higgs and Jeanie Fitchen ask questions. Bill Lee and Beth Gill (of the Sarasota Sailor Circus) continue discussing the circus. Beth Higgs facilitates discussion by Curly Dekle and Barbara Beauchamp on the history of the Florida Folk Festival. Because this was the 40th festival, the Crossroads area was partly devoted to performers who contributed to the festival's past and development.

Description
One video recording (VHS; 60 minutes) Video highlights of a summer school program the FFP offered for South Hamilton Elementary School. The program, aimed at the "at risk" students (K-5) had tow goals: 1. acquire knowledge of folk traditions (riddles, tales, etc.) 2. enhance the students self-esteem The program began with Jacksonville-based storyteller Smith, and followed by instruction by folklorists Shanafelt and Higgs. At the end, the folklorists assessed the success of the program.
