Between 1986 and 1987, a partnership between the Florida Folklife Program and the American Folk Center created the Maritime Heritage Survey Project. Focusing on the Gulf and Atlantic fishing cultures, and utilizing photographs, slides, oral histories, and on-site interviews, the survey climaxed with a demonstration area at the 1987 Florida Folk Festival. The three main researchers were Nancy Nusz, Merri Belland, and project director David Taylor. Additional information on the project can be found in Taylor's project files in S 1716.

- One reel to reel recording. Fishing Industry workshop: Folklorist Taylor interviewed the fishers (Filman, Herrin, Bennett) about the occupation and training, and the issue involved. Filman was from Steinhatchee, Herrin was from Mayport, and Bennett was from Welaka. Net making workshop: Folklorist Taylor interviewed the net makers (Smith, Buzier, Mora) about their occupation and training, and how to make nets. Mora was from Cortez, Smith from Port St. Joe, and Buzier was from Apalachicola. The folklife area in 1987 focused on Maritime folklife, which stemmed from Taylor's work on the 1986 Maritime Heritage Project, and cooperative project between the FFP and the Library of Congress.
