Description: One video recording (35 minutes, VHS). Memorial Service for singer-songwriter Will McLean, held at the Thomas Center in Gainesville. Includes eulogies and memories by Florida Folk Festival director Thelma, Boltin,singer-songwriter Don Grooms, an emotional Seminole chairman and singer James (Jim) Billie, singer-protégé Gamble Rogers, Barbara Sheen Todd, singer-environmental activist Dale Crider, and Cherill Heaton. Plus performances McLean's songs by Jeanie Fitchen (on autoharp), Dougs Gauss, Wayne Martin, Frank Thomas, Don Grooms, Dennis Devine, Mary Ann Dinella, Sandra Jamieson, Ernie Williams, and Barbara Sheen Todd (who sings his first song). These are interspersed with scenes from a 1982 PBS special on McLean, and concludes with audio from McLean's last performance (St. Augustine, October 29, 1989). Many other folk artists are visible in the audience, including Bobby Hicks. Produced by Margaret Longhill and Philip Schwartz for the McLean Foundation. Singer-songwriter Will McLean was often called the 'Father of Florida Folk.' The Black Hat Troubadour, a nickname given for the hat he usually wore, authored hundreds of songs, and was a national figure on the folk music scene. A fifth generation Floridian, he died in 1990 from cancer.

Description: One video recording. (VHS; 30 minutes) Includes Michael Callen, Gamble Rogers, Doug Gauss, Robin Hendrix, Wayne Martin, Landon Walker, and Mal Hillard. Rogers served as emcee. Singer-songwriter Will McLean was often called the 'Father of Florida Folk.' The Black Hat Troubadour, a nickname for the hat he usually wore, authored over 3500 songs, and was a national figure on the folk music scene. A fifth generation Floridian, he died in 1990 from cancer, the year after he won the Florida Folk Heritage award. In 1996, he was inducted in the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. Audio recordings of the tribute can be found on reels T91-51 and T91-52, in S 1576. Images from the tribute can be found in S 1577, v. 60, slides S92-592 through S92-634.

Description: One compact disc. Gauss served as emcee. Based out of Portland, Oregon, Anger is a violinist who plays jazz, classic, old time, and bluegrass. He began with the David Grisman Quintet and later formed the Turtle Island Quartet in San Francisco. Grier was a bluegrass guitarist. E learned from his father, Lamar Grier, who played banjo for Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys in the 1960s. Josh Kinken backed-up on mandolin.

Florida Memory is funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Florida's LSTA program is administered by the Department of State's Division of Library and Information Services.

For FY2022-23, the percentage of total costs for the Florida Memory program financed with federal money is 66%; the federal dollar amount to be spent on the program is $646,422. This program does not receive any non-governmental funding.
