Description
Three DAT tapes. Digital audio tapes (DAT) generated by fieldwork undertaken to document the folklife of the Callahan neighborhood of Orlando, Florida. Results of the fieldwork were incorporated into the "Folklife Of Central Florida" folklife theme area at the 1994 Florida Folk Festival. The tapes feature African-American hymn lining and blues, folk tales, and children's games. Images of the project can be found in folder 1.

Description
Twenty-six color slides. Toro Huaco were a Nicaraguan dance group, including Jose Silva and his apprentice Jose Silva. They were from Pembroke Pines. Hymn liner Demps and his apprentice Wright; both were from Orlando. And Japanese dancer Kazuko Law (of Gulf Breeze) with her apprentice Ofuyu Raiko Forrest (of Pensacola). They performed as Wako Kai. The Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program began in 1983 with a NEA grant of $22,000. The program provided an opportunity for master folk artists to share technical skills and cultural knowledge with apprentices in order to keep the tradition alive. Apprentices must have had some experience in the tradition and agreed to train for at least six months. The first project director was Blanton Owen, later replaced by folklorist Peter Roller. The program was continued each year through at least 2006.

One digital audio tape (DAT). Bucuvalas served as the emcee. Banks and Demps demonstrated hymn lining. The Johnsons were Lisa Johnson (piano, keyboard), John Johnson (guitar, mandolin), Martin Johnson (fiddle), and Vgo. From Gainesville, they played Klezmer music. Romeo and the Boys played Trinidadian music. The included Ragbir, Mahesh Roopharine, Chris Jai Karan, Joe Ramanan, Robert Ragbit, Barry Jai Karan, and Shivanan Ramanan. They were participants in the Folklife Apprenticeship program. Apo and Lavoi played Hawaiian music, including playing the poi balls.

One digital audio tape (DAT). Between 6:00 and 7:00, the Florida Folklife Program, with folklorist Bucuvalas, presented the 1999 participants in the Florida Folk Arts Apprenticeship program. Banks apprenticed under hymn liner Demps; Ragbir taught several apprentices apprenticed Indo-Trinidadian music; and Edge apprenticed under Chinese zheng player Yao. Then Williams took over as emcee.
