Description
One digital audio tape (DAT). Born in Kentucky in 1936, Hall was a popular country songwriter-performer in the 1960s and 1970s, with a total of seven #1 hits. He began his career as a teenager performing in a local bluegrass band. After a stint in the US Army and work as a radio deejay, Hall began writing songs for country performers during the 1960s. His songs included "Hello, Vietnam" and "Harper Valley PTA." By the 1970s, he was a popular performer in his own right. In 1986, he retired, and in the 1990s moved to the Florida panhandle. He returned to the business in 1996 with a Florida-inspired album, Song from Sopchoppy, followed by Home Grown in 1997. Billy Dean's performance continues on D99-15.

John McEuen and Jimmy Ibbotson were members of the country-rock-bluegrass group the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, formed in 1965 and originally based out of California. McEuen replaced band member Jackson Browne in 1966. Along with the Byrds, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band helped move popular rock music into the folk and country genres. Their influential 1972 album, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," features many famous country and old-time performers, including Merle Travis, Maybelle Carter and Vassar Clements. McEuen left the band in 1987, and Ibbotson left in the 1990s. In 2000, McEuen and Ibbotson released the album "Stories and Songs."
