Description
158 color slides. Includes images of cane syrup making, from grinding the sugar cane, boiling the syrup, and finally canning the end product. Done as a demonstration of the rural tradition at Rural Folklife Days. Each fall, the Stephen Foster Center and the Florida Folklife Program held a festival demonstrating the rural folk arts and traditions of North Florida, including farming, sugar cane grinding, lye soap making, and quilting. Among the rural folk artists in 1994 were quilters Bailey and Jones (slides 766-776), blacksmith Hollenback (slides 777-790), and soap makers Smith and Taylor.

Description
Nine color slides. Images of long-time Lake Wales resident and rancher Sam Keen winning a Pioneer of the Year award at the annual Pioneer Days in Lake Wales. Begun in 1977 and held each fall, the festival celebrates the pioneer period (1853-1925) of Lake Wales through traditional arts, entertainment, and food. A Pioneer of the Year award is handed out during each festival.

Description
Forty color slides. Between 1952 and 1959, the Suwanee River Jamboree radio show -- broadcast from Live Oak, Florida on WNER -- was Florida's largest and best known country music show. It was broadcast live three hours every Saturday night, with 30-minute versions syndicated across the Southeast. The show featured many North Florida and Southeastern acts such as the Stanley Brothers. The concert in these images was held in 1984 as a celebration of the radio series, and included several local bluegrass bands. A second jamboree was held the follwing year (see S 1627, Box 5). 1291 -1292, 1297-1299; 1301-1303: Suwannee River Fire band; 1293-1294: The Dixie Jubilees; 1295-1296: Big Timber Bluegrass; 1300, 1307, 1312: JC Johnson, Aubrey Fowler; 1304-1306: Cross Creek Cloggers; 1308-1311: Cross Creek Cloggers and Suwannee River Fire band; 1313-1314: Bucksnort Barndance Band; 1315-1319: Graham Richards and the Dixie Jubilees; 1320-1323: The Woodham Family; 1324-1330: Rev. Two color slides. Image of Florida folk singer McLean performing on the main stage. Singer-songwriter Will McLean was often called the 'Father of Florida Folk.' The Black Hat Troubadour, a nickname for the hat he usually wore, authored over 3500 songs, and was a national figure on the folk music scene. A fifth- generation Floridian, he died in 1990.
